About the Winery:

Garmon Continental is the Garcia family’s (Bodegas Mauro and San Román Bodegas y Vinedos) commitment to ancestral, smallholder viticulture based on old, vineyards of low vigour situated in high, cool, and continental riverside areas with a long maturity cycle.

The 2014 vintage was the first for Garmon, the only wine produced at the all-new winery of the same name built over a three-hectare plot in “Pago de la Barca” opposite the Duero as it passes through Quintanilla de Onesimo and Olivares in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region.

Vintage:

Fresh vintage, marked by the availability of water throughout the entire cycle. Autumn was wet and mild, winter began cold and foggy. February changed that dynamic, with temperatures warmer than usual for this month. In April it rained almost every day, with few dry periods, which slightly delayed sprouting. Spring continued warm and the vines, which had water, had excellent fruit set and a vivacious development of the shoots and canopy. Harvest began on 14 September and, after a pause of several days due to rain, ended on 1 October.

Tasting Notes:

Suggestive nose with very fresh black fruit, penetrating spicy notes and an earthy background. Spirited and lively, it has length and tension. Compact and juicy tannins.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2020 Garmón is a 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, aged for 20 months in primarily French oak barrels. Purple with a garnet sheen. The fruit-forward nose offers dried plum, blackcurrant and aniseed-like herbs intertwined with oak layers. Dry and plush from the oak, the wine's chalky texture grows more pronounced as it goes on, foregrounding a restrained but juicy, polished, lingering finish. The 2020 is a balanced, modern expression of Ribera del Duero. (Drink between 2025-2040)" - Joaquin Hidalgo (Nov 2023)
94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"A graceful, deftly integrated red, this opens with a beautiful range of dried rose petal, black tea leaf, ground cardamom and fresh earth aromas -- a fragrant skein that winds through dried raspberry and black plum reduction flavors. Fresh and focused on the palate, with fine-grained tannins creating a firm frame for the swath of generous flavors. Bright and well-spiced on the persistent finish. Drink now through 2034. 4,200 cases made, 200 cases imported." - Alison Napjus (Jul 2024)
93+ Points - Wine Advocate:
"Tasted along with the 2019, the 2020 Garmón is from a cooler year with more rain that resulted in fresher wines, a little lighter. This is still dominated by black ripe fruit, hints of licorice and earth and a creamy and smoky/spicy touch from the 20 months in 225-liter barriques. It's medium to full-bodied with abundant, slightly dusty tannins and more earthiness in the finish. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2022." - Luis Gutierrez (Jan 2023)
