About the winery:

If you are at all familiar with Brunello di Montalcino, you are likely familiar with Biondi-Santi. Brunello can actually trace its origins to a single man, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, who produced the first-ever Brunello di Montalcino using a clone of Sangiovese called Sangiovese Grosso. The family member credited with ushering Brunello di Montalcino into the modern era while simultaneously maintaining tradition is Franco Biondi Santi, Ferruccio's great-grandson, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 91. Today Franco’s son, Jacopo, remains the president and head winemaker at Biondi-Santi, along with his son Tancredi, the seventh generation of winemakers.

At the end of 2016, the family sold the majority portion to family-owned French wine and fashion powerhouse EPI. (EPI also owns bubbly houses Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck as well as several upscale fashion and shoe brands.) With their continued involvement as head winemakers, the Biondi-Santi family continues to produce wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity.

About this Wine

This wine was originally known as the Biondi-Santi “White Label Brunello”, but changed its name in 1983, when the Rosso di Montalcino DOC was established. It reflects the signature style of our high-altitude vineyards with a vibrant freshness and a distinct fruitiness which makes it thoroughly enjoyable at a young age.

A rainy and cold spring with slow growth of shoots and late flowering preceded a hot and dry June and July. Around mid-July northern winds cooled off the temperatures for some days. August was hot and dry but also brought rain showers at the end of the month, providing ideal ripening conditions in the last days leading up to harvest. Picking started on September 14th.

At harvest, the grapes displayed a perfect balance between fruit, tannins, and acidity. Traditional red wine vinification at controlled temperatures

Aging: 12 months in Slavonian oak

Technical Information

Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese Grosso (BBS11 Clone)

Alcohol: 13%

Tasting Notes

A lovely encounter of flowers and red berry fruits, the Rosso di Montalcino 2019 reveals fresh, energetic notes of cherries, blood oranges, pomegranate, violets, and honeysuckle, followed by balsamic sensations of kitchen herbs, licorice root, and menthol. The nose and palate are fully aligned as the crunchy tannins and lively acidity blend in with this Rosso’s impressive, levigated fruity core, leading us toward a savory finish with long-lingering mineral notes

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Wine Advocate:

"This flight of three Biondi-Santi wines starts off on the right foot thanks to the pristine bouquet and lively fruit of the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino. This is the entry-level wine (although the price point certainly suggests otherwise). It shows very detailed and chiseled aromas of wild cherry, cassis, dried violet, rust and orange skin. The wine carries a strong structural frame; however, the mouthfeel is ethereal and light notwithstanding." Drink 2025-2040. - Monica Larner (May 2023)

94 Points - James Suckling:
"Aromas of sliced citrus, cherry and flowers follow through to a medium body, with creamy tannins and crunchy fruit at the finish. Lovely combination of fruit and acidity. Very drinkable now but will age nicely." (Aug 2022)

94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2019 Rosso Di Montalcino is pure and energetic, with ripe cherry fruit, rose petals, orange zest, and spice. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and ripe, soft, supple fruit throughout, it is energetic and long on the palate, with a soft, coating mineral texture. Elegant, pure, and warming on the finish, with no harsh edges, its floral perfume lingers with notes of lavender, red berries, and refreshing salinity. Drink 2025-2040." (3/6/2023)

92 Points - Vinous:

"The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino keeps me coming back to the glass to take in its dusty mix of dried strawberries and currants offset by lifting nuances of shaved pine and mint. Soft and round in expression, the 2019 impresses on its lush textures and vivid wild berry fruit. Through it all, a core of saline tension builds, mingling minerals with gentle tannins, as the 2019 finishes with a staining of concentration, yet maintains a lovely freshness." Drink. 2023-2028. - Eric Guido (December 2022)

91 Points - Wine Spectator:

"A refined Rosso, this evokes cherry, strawberry, floral and iron flavors aligned with a supple texture and firm structure. Harmonious and long, but needs some time to integrate. Drink now through 2033." - Bruce Sanderson (Ausgust 2023)
