About the Domaine:
In 1818, Nicolas François Billecart and his wife Elisabeth Salmon founded the house of Billecart-Salmon in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, which now stands as the oldest continuously family-owned and operated house in Champagne. The estate is currently managed by the family’s seventh generation, brothers François and Antoine Roland-Billecart, while the cellars lie in the hands of Florent Nys.
After 33 years, François Domi has handed over the baton of Chief Winemaker to Florent, who has been working as an apprentice under the watchful eye of François since 2005, is now ready to take over the reins.
About this Wine:
Historically, the only vintage dated Brut Rose that Billecart has EVER released has been their Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon, which was only bottled in the most exceptional of vintages, and was none too easy to find.
This is the second ever Brut Rose Vintage released by Billecart-Salmon.
The first release was the 2010 vintage, and much like that, this very limited release is a declassified version of their famed Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon Brut Rosé, which means outrageous quality at half the normal price.
In the long and storied history of over 200 years, there occasionally emerges a wine and vintage that, while not perfectly aligned with the house’s traditional expectations, is far too exceptional to be blended into the non-vintage cuvée. For Billecart-Salmon, the 2015 vintage of Rosé is precisely such a wine.
The year 2015 brought ideal conditions for flowering and harvest, though marked by heat and drought, which contributed to a wine of remarkable fruit intensity and power. Its true strength lies in its length, juiciness, and the presence of exotic spices. Observing its evolution on the lees over a nine-year period was as thrilling as it was inspiring.
The result is a wine that rightfully earns its place among the distinguished offerings of the Billecart-Salmon stables—a rare and distinguished cuvée, worthy of recognition and celebration on any occasion.
A blend of 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, the 2015 Brut Rosé spent over 8 years on the lees (98 months, to be precise), and has the trademark Billecart elegance paired with powerfully fresh fruit and a gorgeous richness from the extended lees aging.
97% vinified in Stainless, 3% Oak casks. 48% Pinot Noir, 52% Chardonnay. 73% Grand Cru, 27% Premier Cru. Aged on lees/in the cellar for 108 months. Dosage is 4.70g/l.
Notes from the Winemaker:
The Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé Vintage displays a beautiful burnished coppery tint, instantly recognizable as a hallmark of Billecart-Salmon Rosé.
Aroma: Upon opening, the aromas of this vintage leap from the glass, enchanting the senses with a delightful bouquet. Fragrant notes of ripe strawberry, luscious melon, and zesty citrus intertwine with the freshness of aromatic herbs.
Palate: With the first sip, the wine reveals a captivating array of flavors. The palate is generously filled with vibrant red berries and the invigorating essence of pink grapefruit. Subtle hints of white pepper add an intriguing spice, while a delicate touch of burnt sugar enhances its complexity. The finale is adorned with the tangy allure of tart pomegranate, leaving a lasting and luxurious impression.
Food Pairing: This exquisite wine is a versatile companion for the entire dinner experience. Its elegance gracefully pairs with delicate crudo dishes, showcasing its finesse. Simultaneously, its weight and depth harmonize with heartier fare such as Beef Wellington, providing a delightful balance and enhancing the overall dining experience.
Ratings & Reviews
"This is the second time that the world's most iconic and respected Rosé Champagne has released as a single vintage, and it's as stunning as we all expected! Compared to the non-vintage, you experience a clear upgrade in refinement, minerality, structure, precision and length, while still delivering the signature understated smooth and silky style. This will age for 15 more years, but how could anyone resist?" (6/6/25)
