About the Domaine:
In 1818, Nicolas François Billecart and his wife Elisabeth Salmon founded the house of Billecart-Salmon in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, which now stands as the oldest continuously family-owned and operated house in Champagne. The estate is currently managed by the family’s seventh generation, brothers François and Antoine Roland-Billecart, while the cellars lie in the hands of Florent Nys.
After 33 years, François Domi has handed over the baton of Chief Winemaker to Florent, who has been working as an apprentice under the watchful eye of François since 2005, is now ready to take over the reins.
About this Wine:
This wines comes from 25 parcels in the chalky soils of the five Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Oger and Mesnil-sur-Oger.
Partial malolactic fermentation is completed depending on each wine's acidity levels followed by up to 5 years of aging. The cuvée is a blend of four vintages.
Ratings & Reviews
" From Grand Cru villages on the Côte des Blancs, this Champagne is beautifully mineral and taut. It has white fruits and intense citrus giving texture and crispness. This is a fine wine, ready to drink." - Roger Voss (December 2023)
“ Very clean and creamy blanc de blancs showing notes of sliced apples, pie crust, lemons, oyster shells and thyme. Lovely freshness and balance, with fine, creamy bubbles and a rounded yet dry finish. Base wine 2017 with 23% of reserve wine. 1.2g/L dosage. Drink now." (August 2024)
" The current release of the NV Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut is based on the 2015 vintage and pours a pale straw color. The nose is clean and pure, with a sun-kissed ripeness, and reveals fresh aromatics of candied green apple, lime, and bread dough. The mousse is elegant, and the wine is ripe, with a rounded feel, and fresh with ripe green apple, lemon-lime, and chalk, followed by a balanced and fairly long finish. It is straightforward, approachable, and classic. Drink 2022-2037." - Audrey Frick (November 2022)
93 Points - Wine & Spirits Magazine:
"Blended from fruit grown in several grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs, with an emphasis on Avize, this is a beautiful green-gold color, a wine fragrant with scents of spring flowers. It balances full-bodied richness with racy acidity, both expansive and mineral-tight. It finishes on a scent that brings to mind oyster shells, and calls out for a dozen freshly shucked Belons." (December, 2016)
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
" Based on the 2015 vintage and dominated this year by Mesnil sur Oger, Billecart's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru was disgorged in July 2021 with seven grams per liter dosage. Exhibiting aromas of citrus oil, tart stone fruit, freshly baked bread and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, its sweet core of fruit framed by racy acids and chalky structure." Drink 2025-2043. - William Kelley (August 2022)
92 Points - Wine Spectator:
" A bright, well-tailored version, with well-honed acidity deftly meshed with a minerally overtone and aromas and flavors of nectarine, lemon curd, pastry and spices. Disgorged July 2021. Drink now." - Alison Napjus (November 2022)
92 Points - Vinous Media:
"Light yellow-gold. High-pitched citrus and orchard fruit scents are complemented by notes of honeysuckle, lemongrass and chalky minerals. Spicy, focused and mineral-driven, with intense Meyer lemon, tangerine and pear skin flavors given depth by a hint of brioche. A note of smokiness builds on the finish, which hangs on with outstanding floral persistence.” - Josh Raynolds (Jan 2015)
