About the Winery:
BV's vines were first planted back in 1900, when founder Georges de Latour noticed similarities with his native Bordeaux and declared the Napa Valley ideal for winemaking. Planting vineyards in Rutherford with grafted, phylloxera-resistent French vines, the Cabernet Sauvignon that de Latour crafted from these grapes gave the world a taste of California's promise as a world-class winemaking region.

In 1938, de Latour hired the young Russian-French enologist, Andre Tchelistcheff. The legacy of Beaulieu Vineyard has helped shape American winemaking for more than a century. Their highly-acclaimed, iconic Cabernets were the first cult wines in the US and have been served at the White House for more than five decades.

About this Wine:
Our Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon has been widely recognized as the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford since its inaugural vintage in 1936. Our understanding of terroir comes from more than 100 years of creating rich, classic Napa Valley wines. Our legacy honors the marriage between state-of-the-art technology and gentle, traditional winemaking methods, a combination that enhances the expression of our remarkable vineyards.

Tasting Notes:
Exemplifying power, elegance, approachability, and finesse, the 2022 vintage opens with delicate dusty rose, wild violet, red berries, caramel crème, and sweet baking spice from the well-integrated oak. The palate is plush and expansive, with a bountiful core of cassis, red currant, cherry, and ripe raspberry. A velvety-smooth, viscous mouthfeel and gentle signature “Rutherford Dust” tannins contribute to its refined structure and balance. The finish lingers with notes of pomegranate, kir royale, floral, and fresh mint. Incredibly drinkable upon release, this classic Napa Valley Cabernet will remain juicy and inviting for many years to come.

Vineyard:
We hand-selected the best grapes from our iconic BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2. Originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s, these vineyards lie on the western bench of the Rutherford AVA. We focused on clonal selections 6, 4, 169, 7, and 8, which yield small berries with the high skin-to-juice ratio needed to make intense, long-lived wines. These vines are deeply rooted in the well-draining, alluvial-fan soils of Rutherford, which is considered one of the finest regions in the Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vintage:
The winter of 2022 was warm and dry. Rain and cooler weather arrived toward the end of March. The mild spring brought a promising early beginning, while the summer surprised us with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. As a result, the harvest produced smaller berries with concentrated flavors and remarkable acidity, resulting in balanced, excellent wines.

Winemaking:
At our state-of-the-art winery, dedicated exclusively to Georges de Latour Private Reserve, a portion of the wine was fermented in new French oak barrels for early integration and dense, rich texture. The balance was fermented in stainless steel and concrete tanks to preserve the fruit’s freshness. After extended skin contact, the wine was pressed and returned to barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. A small amount of Petit Verdot was blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon to enhance the wine’s aromas and flavors. The meticulous barrel regime is essential to the elevated quality of this wine. We work closely with only a small number of select cooperages to ensure the style and consistency of the barrels.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - James Suckling:
"Power and grace come together beautifully in this long-running classic from a 125-year-old Napa winery. So rich, layered, structured and age-worthy. Now blended with about 20% of grapes grown in different locations around the valley but centered on Rutherford-grown fruit. The addition of 9% petit verdot gives an inky dark component and floral, violet accents. Drinkable now, but best from 2030." (Jan 2025)

95 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Subtle aromatics of red-berry fruit and cedarwood spice lift from the glass, offering an inviting entry. Bold and medium-to full-bodied, the palate is layered with concentrated black cherry, blackberry, and spiced black currants, complemented by toasty vanilla-laced cedarwood and toasted fennel. The finish is lengthy and spice-driven, showcasing depth, structure, and a well-integrated balance of fruit and oak—a powerful yet refined expression. Aged 21 months in 95% new French oak. Grapes were sourced from the western bench of the Rutherford AVA from BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2, originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s. The sites are well-draining alluvial soils." - Jonathan Cristaldi (Feb 2025)
