About the Winery:
The Cantina Bartolo Mascarello is one of the legendary and historic producers of the Barolo appellation. The winery has stood as a beacon of staunch Barolo traditionalism since its official inception in 1918.

For many Barolo collectors, the Cantina Bartolo Mascarello has a special place in their hearts because of its fully independent spirit and unwavering dedication to the traditions and practices of a bygone era in Barolo. When Barolo producers began producing ‘Single-Cru’ wines in the 60s and 70s, Bartolo refused to follow suit claiming staunchly that his blended wine, made from their four vineyards in Barolo and La Morra, made a better wine combined than as single-vineyard expressions. To this day, this same philosophy and practice remains firmly in place.

About this Wine:
The Barolo is a blend of Canubbi (1 HA), San Lorenzo (.25 HA), Rue (.5 HA) and Rocche di Annunziata (1.2 HA). Given the steep terrain of the zone, all vineyard work is done by hand, including, of course, the harvest. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used.

Technical Information

In the cellar, all wines are fermented in old concrete tanks, with a simple yet rudimentary system of temperature control. The Barolo is kept on its skins for 30-50 days, depending on the vintage. Pump-overs are used early in the fermentation, followed by prolonged Capello Sommerso, or submerged cap maceration. The wine is then pressed in an old-school basket press before a long aging in large untoasted Slavonian oak botti (2 ½-3 years). The Barolo is bottled three years after the September harvest and then held for a year before release.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Camphor, dark spice, cedar and a whiff of sun warmed hay slowly shape the enticing nose. The full-bodied palate boasts weightless finesse and a great depth of flavors, featuring ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and a hint of tobacco framed in firm but refined tannins. Drink 2025–2032." KERIN O’KEEFE (12/31/2021)

96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Showing a light ruby shine that radiates from the glass, the Bartolo Mascarello 2017 Barolo proves once again that elegance can be achieved, despite the many challenges of an extreme vintage, when worked by the right hands. In this case, the hands are those of Bartolo's daughter, the legendary Maria Teresa Mascarello. This celebrated Barolo boasts a silky sheen and glossy character that transcends bouquet and mouthfeel. Wild cherry, lilac, iron ore and candied orange peel are revealed softly on the bouquet. The wine takes a few minutes to open before all those pretty little details come into view. Acidity is an important component of this graceful Barolo, as it ties together the fruit and heightens that sense of electricity and liveliness. This is a collectors' bottle to keep safely in your cellar." - Monica Larner (17th Jun 2021)

96 Points - The Wine Independent:
The 2017 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo starts off shy but develops into a complex nose of truffle, flint and iris notes mixed with a touch of orange peel. It has a very beautiful texture, harmonious and silky smooth, and sweeps across the palate with lots of fine, gravelly-textured tannins at the end. This wine shows an amazingly filigree and delicate touch to the tannins especially given the challenges of the very dry and at times hot 2017 vintage. The finish is very firm but fine, dry and savory. There is a wonderful, seamless feel to this wine with always a fine lace-like quality to the aromas and flavors, thanks to the skilled touch of owner Maria Teresa Mascarello. A delightful example of the 2017 vintage. 2024-2050

96 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"The 2017, as with the exceptional 2016, instead includes grapes from Monrobiolo di Bussia. Harvest was completed on 23 September, more or less two weeks earlier than average. In the winery, the maceration was reduced from the usual 40-50 days to 20. Subdued rose and tar notes are joined by a leafy lightness, then a crystalline definition of red berries in both aroma and flavour. Velvety tannins and assertive acidity hold the wine in tension and balance, powered by orange savouriness. It's more delicate and less extracted than 2016, but with similar ageing potential." - Aldo Fiordelli (28 Mar 2021)

94 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2017 Barolo is gracious, perfumed and very nicely lifted. An effusive, floral bouquet opens first, followed by a rush of red berry fruit. Nervous, a bit wiry at this stage, the 2017 is going to need at least a few years to fully open, but all the elements are in place to allow that to happen. Maria Teresa Mascarello's Barolo is one of the most elegant and restrained wines of the year. It's not an immediately impressive or captivating wine at this stage. The purity of the flavors is just striking, though. Give it a few years to blossom." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2021)
