Notes from the Winemaker:
Terroir:
Marziano Abbona Barbera d'Alba Rinaldi comes from plantings within the estate's 4 acres vineyard in the commune of Monforte d'Alba. The south facing vineyard sits at an elevation of over 1300 feet and contains thickly planted vines of 35-50+ years. The vineyard takes it's name from Marziano Abbona's mother who's family once owned this vineyard.
Vinification:
The Barbera Rinaldi is vinified at cool temperatures in rotating stainless steel fermenters. Following fermentation the wine is racked and aged for 6 months in steel and 8 months in French oak casks.
Tasting Notes:
The 2012 Rinaldi offers up a pure nose bursting with ripe berry fruit. The purity of fruit follows through on the medium bodied palate with deep layers of raspberry, plum and blackberry combined with a touch of mint.
Total Production: 18,500 bottles

Wine Spectator:
"Leather and spice notes accent the core of plum and cherry in this generous version. Smooth, with a whisper of tannins on the long finish. Drink now through 2017. 420 cases imported." – BS (Nov 15, 2014)
Vinous Media:
"The 2012 Barbera d'Alba Rinaldi fleshes out in the glass with expressive dark red stone fruits, iron, smoke and new leather overtones. This savory, fruit forward Barbera is a good choice for drinking over the next few years. Only a hint of gaminess detracts from the wine's otherwise solid balance." - Antonio Galloni, (November 2014)
Vinous Media (2011 Vintage):
"Abbona's 2011 Barbera d'Alba Rinaldi wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and richness. Plum, black cherry, spice and leather notes all flesh out in the glass. The 2011 is open, resonant and inviting. It should drink well for another few years." -
Antonio Galloni (October 2013)
Wine Spectator (2011 Vintage):
"A rich style, drenched in blackberry and black currant fruit. Shows some kick, with a little heat on the finish. Should settle in nicely. Drink now through 2015. 900 cases imported." – BS (Web Only - 2013)
90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2008 vintage):
"Abbona’s 2008 Barbera d’Alba Rinaldi is equally delicious. Juicy dark cherries, licorice and French oak burst from the glass in this sumptuous Barbera. The Rinaldi is truly impressive; in fact, the 2008 is the best vintage I can remember tasting of this wine. The Rinaldi is aged in a combination of 225-liter barriques and larger 500-liter tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016." (Aug 2010)
90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
“Dark and oozing with blackberry, chocolate, violet and spice aromas and flavors, this red has a nice grainy feel to its tannins. The wood is nicely integrated, lifting the fruit to the forefront. Lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2012. 400 cases imported." –BS (11/15/2010)
90 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2008 vintage):
“Smooth and sophisticated with rich blackberry and plum aromas backed by oak-driven tones of spice and leather, this is a very rich expression of Barbera. The over-all effect is excellent and the mouthfeel culminates with bright tones of prune and crushed black pepper.†(9/2010)
