About the Wine:

Selección Especial is the first wine from Abadía Retuerta, in which the best wines of the vintage that come from the separate vinification of the 54 vineyards in which the winery's vineyard has been classified are selected and blended. It is made mainly with the native variety of the Duero Valley, Tempranillo, and is complemented with other varieties from the estate that are chosen by tasting. The purpose is to balance the particularities of the vintage and preserve the style that characterizes this wine.

Selección Especial is a faithful reflection of the vintage, the terroir and the personality of Abadía Retuerta.

Tasting Notes:
It is a high-layered wine, cherry red in tone with purple hues that denote its aging potential. Aromatically complex, with a great presence of red fruits such as wild strawberry, plum and blackberry, and with perfumed floral and spicy notes of licorice, creamy and balsamic with hints of juniper wood and sandalwood. In the mouth it is volume, tasty, with an elegant mid-palate, fine, soft and enveloping tannins, which precede a very long and friendly palate.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - James Suckling:
"A deep nose, full of charcoal, sandalwood, olives, black pepper and blackberries. The oak is starting to integrate. Full-bodied palate with a creamy texture, accentuated by powdery tannins. Long, juicy and creamy finish. Drink now or hold." (Nov 2022)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
2018 was a cooler year with more rain and higher yields, and the 2018 Selección Especial—77% Tempranillo, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Syrah, 1% Merlot, 0.8% Petit Verdot and 0.3% Garnacha—shows very harmonious and better integrated oak than the 2017. Despite having similar analytical data, the wine comes through as fresher, more balanced, more fluid and with a finer texture given the quality of the tannins. 532,607 bottles produced. It was bottled in May and June 2020." - Luis Gutierrez (June 2021)
