About the Winery:
Winemaker Andy Erickson has been producing wines with an unrelenting focus on quality and sourcing for over 30 years, crafting some of the most sought-after bottles in Napa Valley. In 2004, he started Leviathan with a single goal: to create one Cabernet-based blend each vintage that would be free from the constraints of appellations, drawing on the strengths of multiple sites throughout the state to capture the beauty and diversity of Northern California.

Since the beginning, this exploratory spirit has fueled our vision to literally chart our own map, pushing beyond AVAs and other conventional winemaking boundaries. Each vintage, the Leviathan team coaxes the very best characteristics from a range of carefully chosen varietals and outstanding vineyards to craft a single intense, complex, and compelling red wine. And with a decade of 90-plus ratings from top critics, it’s one that—whether poured as an everyday wine or reserved for special occasions—consistently overdelivers. That’s the power of Leviathan.

Making wine without constraints means opening the imagination to the diversity of California’s terroir. But power in a red wine derives in part from hardworking vines, and this characteristic can be found particularly in slope-side vineyards with volcanic-based, well-drained soils—which are found in abundance along the Mayacamas Mountains.

Working alongside Andy Erickson, Nicole Hayden—our director of grower relations, who brings decades of farming and vineyard experience from her Sonoma upbringing—has logged thousands of miles in her truck to build and deepen our relationships with prestigious vineyards, renowned generational growers, and emerging young farmers across Northern California. Together they’ve walked countless rows, meeting spouses and dogs and swapping ideas and observations, learning what makes each site tick.

This ongoing collaboration with our growers allows us to fully express the best characteristics and potential of each distinctive site. While our drive to keep exploring new ideas and places evolves our sourcing each year, our core partners have remained our stalwarts for years.

About the Wine:
Each year, the Leviathan winemaking team crafts a singular, unique blend from carefully chosen California sites and varietals that showcases the best characteristics of the vintage. These wines are built on a core of mountainside Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides power in the structure and texture. But they also pull in varying amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot—which together shape a consistent balance of flavor intensity and alluring backbone of fresh, vibrant acidity. The result is a powerful, quintessentially California red blend.

The 2022 proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot highlight some of my favorite growing regions in Northern California, including Oakville, Coombsville, Pope Valley, Lake County, and Napa Valley.

The wine is marked by alluring aromas of sweet cigar wrapper, luxardo cherry, and plum. Currants, baking spices, and black tea contribute to a palette that is both earthy and savory, shaped by our rocky Northern California terrain. The fine, chalky tannins are structured and elegant.

94 Points -  Jeb Dunnuck (2021 v.):

"Always a good value, the 2021 California Red Wine is no exception and has darker berry fruits, some leafy herb, sage, lavender, and chocolate nuances, full-bodied richness, and a lush, round, seamless style that's already impossible to resist. This is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (with plenty of other red varieties), and it should shine for 7-8 years, if not a decade, although I would drink this puppy in its youth." (Dec 2023)

93 Points - Vinous (2021 v.):

"The 2021 Leviathan is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the best editions of Leviathan I can remember tasting. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. Dark cherry/plum fruit, spice, new leather and licorice are all dialed up. Shortening the time in barrel from 18-20 months to 14 makes a huge difference in how the wine captures fruit intensity and finesse. Few winemakers know Napa Valley as well as Andy Erickson does. All of that expertise comes through in a gorgeous wine that over-delivers on all counts." Drink 2023-2030

93 Points - James Suckling (2021 v.):

"Blueberries, black berries, and flowers. Some stone. Spearmint and fresh bay leaves. Medium to full body with layers of juicy tannins that are rounded and textured. Creamy and caressing. 65% cabernet sauvignon with cabernet franc, petite sirah, petit verdot and merlot. Lovely to drink now." (Jan 2024)
