About The Winery:
Before 1894, Nebbiolo grapes where sold to make Barolo wine or simply labeled «Nebbiolo di Barbaresco». But in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, created the first cooperative, the «Cantine Sociali», by gathering together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in the local castle that he owned. He understood well the differences between the same grape, the Nebbiolo, grown in the different areas of Barolo and Barbaresco and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label.
The «Cantine Sociali» was closed in the 1930’s because of fascist economic rules. In 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way the small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. The first three vintages were made in the church basement, then in the winery built across the square where the Produttori is still located.
United once again, the small growers continued the work started by Domizio Cavazza, producing only Barbaresco wine and enhancing both the reputation of the wine and the village. The proud past of Barbaresco and the dedication of its creators have made the Produttori one of the greatest producers in a great wine-producing area; it…«continues to set some of the highest standards of winemaking for any cooperative in the world». (Robert M. Parker, Jr.; The Wine Advocate, 2-28-90).
Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations.
Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produced in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabaja, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Paje, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo.
The Vintage:
The 2023 vintage began with uncertainties due to the anomalous climatic trend of the previous year, characterized by a long period of drought.
The winter, colder than the previous one, lasted until the end of February with little rainfall, and the beginning of the growing cycle, budbreak, occurred in the last ten days of March. Plant development then continued steadily despite the fluctuating weather: the first part of spring was characterized by very dry weather, while the months of May and early June saw frequent and sometimes significant rainfall and generally cool weather. These conditions, on the one hand, allowed plants under stress from the prolonged drought to recover from drought, but on the other, required great attention from the winemakers to prevent the onset of early plant diseases during the delicate flowering period of early June.
The summer was hot and dry, which also reduced overall production and slowed ripening. The last half of August was particularly hot, but a rain shower on the 28th brought a few days of relief from the heat.
September continued to be dry and temperatures were above average until the 24th, when nights became cooler with excellent temperature ranges until October 3rd, when the Nebbiolo harvest began without any particular problems. The end of September, with its good temperature ranges, helped complete the organoleptic ripening, and waiting until October allowed the harvest to produce ripe and balanced grapes, although not particularly concentrated in aromas and tannins.
A difficult 2023 season, due to the prolonged water shortage, with a rather reduced production, but with a good organoleptic balance.
A harvest that can produce pleasant and highly drinkable wines.
Points & Reviews
92 Points - Wine Advocate:
"This wine was bottled approximately one month before I tasted it in October and was set to hit the market in November 2024. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a shiny ruby appearance and offers crunchy fruit flavors with blueberry and tart raspberry. Fruit is collected from the sites and the warmer microclimates that don't end up in the Barbaresco program, and the wine sees a shorter maceration time, lasting 21 days." - Monica Larner (Jan 2025)
92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"You know that moment when you're in Italy and everything just feels right? This wine captures that feeling. Red cherries and alpine herbs play it cool before surprising you with a fizzy cola kick at the end. It's the perfect Tuesday night transport to a Piedmontese trattoria." - Jeff Porter (Dec 2025)
90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is a tasty entry-level offering from the Produttori. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, chalk and mint are beautifully lifted. This perfumed, mid-weight Nebbiolo delivers on all front. All of the fruit for this wine is from Barbaresco-designated vineyards, a true rarity. What a delight. (Drink between 2025-2031)" - Antonio Galloni (Oct 2025)
90 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is a bright medium red color and is very pretty and spiced on the nose with aromas of white pepper, wild strawberries, and floral perfume. This is still entirely made from Barbaresco fruit and was rested for 4 months in large barrel. The palate is refined and medium bodied, and the wine is salty and fresh, with chalky, fine tannins, and an elegant citrusy finish. Drink now or over the coming 5-6 years. (Drink between 2025-2031)" - Audrey Frick (May 2025)
