THE LEGEND — BRUNO GIACOSA: ITALY'S FIRST GROWTH

Born in Neive in 1929. Started in the family cellar at 15. Never attended enology school. Built the most celebrated body of work in Italian wine history.

Decanter places Bruno Giacosa among Italy's First Growths. Wine Spectator called him the "icon of Piedmont." Robert Parker wrote that Giacosa produced "some of Italy's greatest Barolos." For many critics, his red label Riservas are the equal of any red wine produced anywhere in the world.

His standards were uncompromising. He refused to bottle entire vintages — including 2006 and 2010 — selling them off in bulk rather than release wine he deemed unworthy of his name. Over more than six decades, he produced a body of work from Barolo and Barbaresco that no other producer has matched across both appellations simultaneously.

Since Bruno's passing in January 2018, his daughter Bruna has continued his legacy with the same exacting philosophy, working alongside longtime enologist Dante Scaglione.

His wines appear on the lists of the world's most decorated restaurants. At Michelin-starred establishments like Sorrel and Acquerello in San Francisco, Bruno Giacosa wines pour at $130 and above per bottle. When a sommelier has access to every producer on earth and chooses Giacosa, that's the only review that matters.

THE WINE — THE MAN WHO SAVED ARNEIS

In the late 1960s, Arneis was vanishing from Piedmont. Bruno Giacosa was one of only two producers who believed it was worth saving.

The grape — native to Piedmont's Roero hills, across the Tanaro River from Barolo and Barbaresco — had fallen into near-obscurity, grown mostly as a field blend component to soften harsh Nebbiolo. Giacosa began bottling it commercially, staking his reputation on a grape most producers had written off.

That decision turned out to be correct. Arneis is now recognized as one of Italy's finest white grapes. And the house that helped revive it remains its definitive producer.

The 2024 Roero Arneis is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel — the same philosophy of precision and restraint Giacosa applied to his greatest Nebbiolos. No oak. No interference. From vines 22–34 years old in the sandy soils of Vezza d'Alba, Monteu Roero, Santo Stefano Roero, Canale, and Montà d'Alba.
