A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

There is a wine that California’s most obsessive collectors quietly hoard. A wine that completely shatters everyone's bias to Zinfandel. It comes from vines planted over 80 years ago, farmed by the son of the God Father of the varietal, who is now America's valiant savior of precious heritage vineyards.

This is Bedrock Wine Co. — and if you haven’t discovered Morgan Twain-Peterson yet, today is the day.

“A tremendous value. A great lens into the range they produce here at Bedrock.”

— Jeb Dunnuck  ·  93 Points
●  Bedrock wines have received countless 96–100 point scores from every major critic — across multiple vintages and multiple single-vineyard bottlings.
●  Ranked #10 and #12 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year — a near-impossible achievement for a Zinfandel at this price point.

The Producer

Why Collectors Are Hoarding Bedrock

Morgan Twain-Peterson MW is not a winemaker who chases scores or trends. He is a historian — a preservationist of California’s most irreplaceable viticultural heritage. His mission: find and farm the oldest surviving vines in the state, vines that were already ancient when Prohibition nearly wiped them out.

He didn’t arrive at that calling by accident. Morgan’s father is Joel Peterson — founder of Ravenswood and the undisputed godfather of American Zinfandel. Joel spent decades championing old-vine Zinfandel as a serious, cellar-worthy wine at a time when the category was dismissed as jug-wine territory. Morgan grew up in that world, absorbed its values, and then built something entirely his own — carrying the torch forward with a Master of Wine credential and an obsessive commitment to sourcing fruit that no one else even knew to look for.

The Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel is his signature expression — sourced from an eclectic field mix of vines averaging 80 years of age, with fruit drawn from some of Sonoma’s most historic ranches: Sodini, Bedrock, Teldeschi, and Evangelho. These are not commodity vineyards. They are living monuments, yielding small crops of concentrated, character-driven fruit that modern plantings simply cannot replicate.

Wine Spectator calls it “sleek and juicy.” Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls it “classy” and “an absolute delight.” Jeb Dunnuck calls it “a tremendous value.” Five critics. Five endorsements. One price: $24.97.

When 80-Year-Old Vines Aren’t Old Enough…

2021 Evangelho Vineyard Heritage Red
Bedrock Wine Co.  ·  Contra Costa County, California

The Evangelho Vineyard was planted in the 1890s — before the automobile, before Prohibition, before California wine was famous. These vines survived every hardship the 20th century threw at them: drought, disease, economics, neglect. They survive today because their roots run deep in the pure sand soils of Contra Costa, and because Morgan Twain-Peterson found them and refused to let them go.

The result: a field blend of Zinfandel, Mataro, and Carignan — with fragments of Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Mission, Palomino, and even a single ancient Clairette Blanche vine identified only through DNA analysis. This is not a wine. It is a time capsule. Only 500 cases made. Only 9 bottles remain at Artisan.

The Final Chapter

2022 Old Hill Ranch Red Wine
Carlisle Wine Co.  ·  Russian River Valley, Sonoma, California
96 Wine Spectator 95+ Jeb Dunnuck 95 Vinous Media

Mike Officer built Carlisle over two decades into one of California’s most respected small-production estates — a winery whose single-vineyard Zinfandels and Rhône-style blends consistently drew scores in the mid-to-high 90s from every major critic who tasted them. Then, quietly, he shut it down.

The 2022 Old Hill Ranch is the last wine Carlisle will ever produce from this site. Old Hill is one of the most historically significant vineyards in Sonoma — planted in 1885, with over 20 varieties co-mingled in the original field blend. Wine Spectator gave it 96 points. Jeb Dunnuck gave it 95+. Vinous gave it 95. At $54.97, it is already underpriced. As a final vintage from a shuttered estate, it is irreplaceable.

2021 Papa's Block Syrah
Carlisle Wine Co.  ·  Russian River Valley, Sonoma, California

Mike Officer was famously a Zinfandel obsessive — but he was equally proud of his Syrahs. Papa's Block was his biggest, most muscular Syrah, the cuvée he made when he wanted "intensity over finesse" (his words). The 2021 is his favorite vintage of Papa's Block to date, built explicitly for aging. Only 489 cases ever produced. Twenty-four days on the skins, 30% whole cluster, all French oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Jeb Dunnuck · 95 pts

"Pouring a deep purple, the 2021 Syrah Papa's Block is ripe with dark scorched earth, boysenberry marmalade, and forest spices. Full-bodied and generous, with a rounded feel, it offers a good deal of ripe tannins, with cocoa, black plum preserve, and turned soil. Drink this ripe, round, ample red 2025–2040."

Jul 2023
Wine Spectator · 94 pts

"Deeply structured and simmering with intensity, this Syrah unfurls with blackberry and raspberry flavors laced with smoked meat, licorice and Asian five-spice, finishing with broad-shouldered tannins. Drink now through 2033."

Vinous / Antonio Galloni · 92–94 pts

"Packed with dark fruit, herbs, scorched earth and strong peppery accents. Powerful and muscular in feel, the Papa's Block is also the biggest Syrah in the range… reminds me of the early wines here, wines that prized intensity over finesse."

2022 Papera Ranch Zinfandel
Carlisle Wine Co.  ·  Russian River Valley, Sonoma, California

Papera Ranch is the grande dame of the Russian River Valley — planted in 1934 by Celestino "Charlie" Papera. Most of the blocks are 95%+ ancient Zinfandel; one block contains Carignan with a sprinkle of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Carlisle picked it in three passes in early October, bled off 7-12% of the juice for concentration, and aged it in all French oak (21% new) before bottling unfined and unfiltered. 1,044 cases made. 4 remain at Artisan.

95 Wine Spectator 95 Jeb Dunnuck 93 Vinous / Galloni
Wine Spectator · 95 pts

"Impeccably structured and rich with personality, this red captures the essence of Russian River Zin, offering dark cherry and blackberry flavors accented by fruitcake spices, dried fig, orange oil and savory pepper tones that finish with youthful but polished tannins. Drink now through 2035."

Tim Fish · Aug 2025

Jeb Dunnuck · 95 pts

"A youthful magenta/purple-tinged color, the 2022 Zinfandel Papera Ranch reveals more high-toned aromas of cinnamon, juicy fresh mixed berry fruit, and fresh pine. Medium to full-bodied… more nervous energy at this stage already. I love it."

Audrey Frick · Jun 2024
Vinous / Antonio Galloni · 93 pts

"The 2022 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is silky, layered and super-refined. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, cedar, leather and dried flowers all meld together in the glass… its balance and overall freshness make up for that. Best of all, this will drink well with minimal cellaring."

These Are the Wines Collectors Quietly Hoard

Old vines. Historic vineyards. Winemakers who care more about the land than the spotlight. This is California wine at its most authentic — and at prices that will not last.

The Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel at $24.97 makes no sense, and it won't remain there moving forward. The Evangelho Heritage has 9 bottles remaining. The three Carlisle wines — Old Hill Ranch, Papa's Block Syrah, and Papera Ranch Zinfandel — will never be made again. All of them belong in your cellar.

Cheers,

— James Tran
