Sir Winston Churchill drank it from 1908 until his death and named a racehorse after the house. The Brut Réserve was the wedding Champagne for William & Kate, Harry & Meghan, and Princess Eugenie. "The Most Drinkable Address In The World"
Sir Winston Churchill Drank Pol Roger Daily From 1908 Until His Death —
and the Bottles Still Wear a Black Border in His Memory.
Churchill discovered Pol Roger in 1908 and stayed loyal for 57 years. He famously declared the house "the world's most drinkable address," named a racehorse "Pol Roger" (which won at Kempton Park in 1953), and consumed an astonishing volume of the wine through every chapter of his career — including the war years.
When Churchill died in 1965, Madame Odette Pol-Roger added a black mourning border to every Brut Réserve label exported to the United Kingdom — a tradition that continues to this day. In 1984, with the family's permission, Pol Roger released the inaugural vintage of the tête de cuvée Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill — produced only in the very best vintages, made entirely from Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards already under vine in Churchill's lifetime.
The 2015 vintage — the latest release — earned 99 points from Wine Enthusiast and 95+ across every other major critic. It is a wine in the model of the man: robust, full-bodied, mature.

A Champagne With a Following
From Churchill and De Gaulle to Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner.
Pol Roger is famously selective — the family seeks neither media presence nor modern celebrity associations. The reputation is built on the wine itself. And yet a remarkable list of historic and contemporary figures has gravitated to it on their own:
|
Sir Winston Churchill Drank Pol Roger from 1908 to his death in 1965. Called the house "the world's most drinkable address." Named a racehorse "Pol Roger." Inspired the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill in 1984. |
President Charles de Gaulle A devoted patron throughout his presidency — Pol Roger was poured at Élysée Palace state dinners and remained the General's personal Champagne of choice. |
|
Harrison Ford · Kevin Costner Both Hollywood legends are well-known modern devotees of Pol Roger — preferring it over the more publicly marketed prestige cuvées. |
The Rockefeller Family A century-long family preference for Pol Roger across multiple generations of one of America's most enduring dynasties. |
"There are perhaps four or five Champagne houses in the world whose name alone signifies the highest possible quality. Pol Roger is one of them. The Royal Warrant, the Churchill story, the wedding-day pours — these are the facts. The wines themselves are simply some of the most precise, balanced, and age-worthy Champagnes you can buy. We have all seven Champagnes in stock, from the $39.99 half-bottle to the 99-point Sir Winston. There is a bottle here for every occasion."

Wine Enthusiast · Roger Voss · 99 Points "The wine is mature, full of ripe yeasty flavors and concentration. The wine, from a great vintage, is at a perfect stage and ready to be drunk. But the wine will also age for many years, certainly until 2030." |
|
James Suckling · 96 Points "Very complex nose with a wide spectrum of candied citrus, dried peach and mirabelle tart aromas. It's full-bodied with superb depth, intensity and complexity. Fresh yet also rich and creamy at the same time, with beautifully integrated acidity and a long, flavorful finish." |

Jeb Dunnuck · 95 Points "The 2019 Vintage Rosé is a more exceptional wine in the range — structured, compact, and defined, with ripe raspberries. Compact and powerful, with very nice energy, real structure, saltiness, and rhubarb, along with a refined, pinpoint, lively, zesty mousse. There is fantastic purity here, with clarity and ripeness supported by refreshing acidity, and it can age for two decades or more without issue." |
|
Vinous · 94 Points "This rich, vinous Rosé packs a pretty substantial punch. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, dried herbs and kirsch are all dialed up. A decidedly extroverted Champagne that captures all the radiance of the year." |

Jeb Dunnuck · 94 Points "It opens to springy and dewy floral aromas of honeydew melon, fresh flowers, citrus blossoms, and pastry dough. Medium-bodied and inviting, it's approachable now and takes on a more mineral character on the palate without ever feeling austere. All its components move seamlessly through the palate, with a refined mousse and a kiss of sunny feel on the finish. Drink between 2024–2040." |
|
James Suckling · 94 Points "I like the berry fruit aromas mingling with bread crust, grapefruit and lemon pastries. It's lively on the palate, with excellent structure and a bright wild-berry character. Clean and nicely focused." |

|
Jeb Dunnuck · 92 Points "Aromas of citrus zest, bread dough, and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied, with a beautiful chalky texture, a light salty flourish, and a more citrus-toned palate. Lovely and approachable, with a refined and focused mousse. For my taste, it takes a slight edge over the standard Brut Réserve — it feels more precise." |

Decanter · 93 Points "Pol is always a great Champagne to serve to your guests: a classy, balanced expression of the three grape varieties allowed by law. It has plenty of rich apple fruit along with a streak of lemon zest and just a hint of juicy tangerine. The palate is round but fresh, and has a long, steely finish which leaves you wanting another sip." |
