A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

Almost all white wine is built to be drunk before the next vintage shows up.

Terlano makes the other kind.

The winery was founded in 1893 by a group of growers in the South Tyrol, high in the Italian Alps, and it is still a cooperative today — 143 families farming 190 hectares. They have been our house pick for whites for years, and our customers' pick for weddings, which is a harder test.

The reason these wines last is in the ground. The bedrock under Terlano is quartz porphyry, volcanic in origin, and the soils above it run 55 to 60 percent quartz with almost no calcium carbonate. Water drains straight through. Nutrients are scarce. Yields limit themselves without anyone having to intervene, and the vines respond to that mild, constant stress by producing their own terroir-specific polyphenols. What comes out of the press is salty, tense, and deep, and it does not fall apart with age. Terlano still opens bottles from the 1950s that taste like they have decades to go.

You will not find a thin white here. You will find balance, layers, minerality, and an insistent freshness — at prices that are a fraction of what equivalent quality costs from regions with better publicists.

"No region in Italy makes more high-quality whites and reds than Alto Adige."

Vinous

Which brings me to the Vorberg. Last year James Suckling gave the 2021 Vorberg Riserva 99 points and named it the #4 wine in his Top 100 Wines of Italy. A Pinot Bianco. Fourth, in the country that also makes Barolo, Brunello, and Amarone.

The 2022 follows it, and it is a different creature — a warm, dry year, caught by those steep Vorberg slopes and turned into something rounder and more open early. Decanter gave it 96. Wine Advocate called it "a beautiful and more accessible taste of the best of Alto Adige." You can drink this one now. You can also put it away for ten years and be very glad you did.

The 2021 Vorberg Riserva. Ninety-nine points, and fourth in Italy. The 2022 lands here Wednesday.

Terlano Pinot Bianco 2024

Cantina di Terlano Pinot Bianco DOC 2024 bottle
100% Pinot Bianco · Stainless Steel · Alto Adige DOC

This is the wine we hand people who tell us they do not like Italian whites. Apple and pear over raspberry and lime, a touch of camomile and lemongrass, then quince and a salty mineral snap that keeps going after you have swallowed. 2024 was the wettest spring in the South Tyrol since 1965 and Pinot Bianco was among the varieties hit hardest — yields down as much as forty percent. Small crops concentrate. You can taste it.

"The Alto Adige produces arguably the finest Pinot Bianco in the world, and this scintillating example is a perfect introduction to the local style. Fermentation and lees ageing in stainless steel only produces a white displaying jasmine inflections to as yet closed pear and yellow peach aromas and a light waxiness. Balanced and with lovely acidity, it's quite fleshy but not fully open yet, showing some nectarine and flowers for now. Really good length, with that classic stony, salty finish."

"Baked apples and fresh pears mingling with lemon curd like a pastry chef's morning prep, everything rich but precisely measured. The palate keeps that balance between power and grace, candied citrus and warm bread notes flowing with the confidence of a winery that's been mastering this dance since forever."

Terlano Cuvee Terlaner 2024

Cantina di Terlano Classico Cuvee Terlaner DOC 2024 bottle
60% Pinot Bianco · 30% Chardonnay · 10% Sauvignon Blanc

This blend was one of the wines Terlano made in its founding year, and they have not stopped since. Pinot Bianco supplies the frame and the acid, Chardonnay the warmth, Sauvignon the top note. Eighty percent rests in stainless, twenty percent on fine lees in large oak, blended a month before bottling. Green apple, white peach, lemon balm, mint. Then a long, mineral, faintly spicy close. Wine Enthusiast has it drinking well through 2045 — which for a wine at this price is close to absurd.

"Showing apricots, peaches and sage, this is layered and savory. On the palate, it's vibrant and refined with silky texture, crisp acidity and a long finish. From organically and biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification."

"Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, the holy trinity of Alto Adige white winemaking, and in the hands of Terlano the result is a wine that quietly defies everything you think you know about drinking windows. Roasted orchard fruit and expressive orange peel with a touch of pith, white rose and a texture that feels settled and sure of itself. Good now, better later, and worth saving for the generation after that. Drink Now – 2045"

Terlano Vorberg Riserva 2022

Cantina di Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg DOC 2022 bottle
Single Vineyard · 12 Months On Lees In Large Oak · 450 to 650 Metres

Vorberg is a south-facing slope on the Monzoccolo above Terlano, steep and sunny, planted between 450 and 650 metres. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand, pressed as whole clusters, fermented slowly in 70 and 30 hectolitre oak casks, then left on the lees for a year. The result is honeydew, white peach, quince jelly and camomile against a hard mineral spine of flint, with a creamy weight that somehow never blunts the salt. Cellar master Rudi Kofler calls it the full potential of the grape. He is not overselling.

"Terlano 'Vorberg' Pinot Bianco Riserva stands as Alto Adige's most celebrated white wine ... it serves as a standard for serious white wine production because it demonstrates the aging characteristics and complex layers which typically define high-end Chardonnay and Burgundy wines. The wine develops richness and structure through its aging process in large oak casks while maintaining its freshness. This is a world class wine, at this price point it is my go to, always. Try cellaring for 10 years or so. You will be surprised."

"An abundance of zippy primary fruit embellished by a squeeze of lemon and lime juice which oozes onto the palate and enlivens the smart oak frame."

Why We Keep Coming Back To This Winery
These whites age like serious reds. Quartz soils, no calcium carbonate, naturally tiny yields. Terlano's own library bottles from the 1950s are still alive, which is not a claim many white wine producers anywhere can make.
A cooperative, not a trophy estate. 143 families, 190 hectares, one shared standard since 1893. Nobody here is paying for a chateau — and it shows on the price tag rather than the label.
Ninety-nine points and fourth in Italy. That was the 2021 Vorberg, and it happened in a field that included every Barolo, Brunello and Super Tuscan Suckling tasted that year.
Our customers serve it at their weddings. They buy it by the case, put it in front of two hundred guests, and nobody asks what it is. They ask where to get it.
The Bottom Line

Start with one bottle.
Nobody ever does.

Every year we send this note, and every year the same thing happens: someone tries the Pinot Bianco because it is the cheapest thing in the email — and three weeks later they are asking us to hold them a case of Vorberg. Take all three if you want the whole picture, from the everyday bottle to the one you forget in the cellar for a decade. Everything arrives this Wednesday, August 5th.

Cheers,

— James Tran
