Conterno Fantino
2020 Barolo
Four Single-Vineyard Crus.

"The 2020 Barolos are elegant, understated wines. It is a vintage of Barolos that impresses with balance and harmony more than power or structure."
— Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Conterno Fantino, one of the most enduring and respected wineries in the Langhe, was born in the early 80s but is now well on their way to official "cult" status — without the usual price tags. They are masters of the modern winemaking style: shorter maceration, aged in both traditional large casks and 100% new French oak barriques. Their Barolos are powerful, charismatic, and have exquisite refinement to remain always balanced and impeccable.

What Is "Modernist" Barolo?

Shorter maceration, aged in BOTH traditional large casks and smaller 100% new French oak barriques. The result: powerful, charismatic, and exquisitely refined — always balanced and impeccable.

The Barolo Reality Check

What Single-Vineyard Barolo
Actually Costs Everywhere Else.

Conterno Fantino delivers 94–97 point single-cru Barolo at a fraction of what the icons command. The quality gap? The critics say there isn't one.

Barolo Producer Vineyard Market Price
Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Riserva ~$1,300–$1,800
Gaja Sori Tilden ~$500–$900
Bartolo Mascarello Barolo (multi-cru blend) ~$400–$500
Giuseppe Rinaldi Brunate / Tre Tine ~$350–$450
Aldo Conterno Gran Bussia Riserva ~$600–$800
★ Conterno Fantino 4 Single-Cru Barolos $94.97–$109.97

Same single-vineyard pedigree. Same 94–97 point scores. A fraction of the price. The critics don't grade on a curve — they grade on what's in the glass.

The Evolution Curve

Drink Now. Or Watch Them Transform
Over the Next 15 Years.

These 2020 Barolos are approachable today — but their real magic unfolds with time in the cellar. Here is what to expect.

Now

2025–2027

Primary Fruit · Youthful Intensity

Vibrant red and dark cherry, raspberry, and fresh florals dominate. Tannins are firm but polished — decant 60–90 minutes and these are gorgeous tonight. The Castelletto and Mosconi are the most approachable now; the Sorì Ginestra and Vigna del Gris reward patience.

5 Yrs

2030

Integration · Secondary Complexity Begins

The oak fully integrates. Tannins soften and become silky. The fruit evolves from fresh cherry to dried rose petal, tar, and dried herbs. Suckling's recommended windows open here — "Best from 2028," "Best from 2029," "Best from 2030." This is where the magic starts.

10 Yrs

2035

Peak Secondary Character · The Sweet Spot

The classic Barolo transformation. Tar, leather, tobacco, truffle, and dried roses emerge. The tannins are fully resolved — velvety and seamless. The fruit has deepened into something savory, earthy, and profoundly complex. This is the plateau where great Barolo lives for years. Open a bottle and it will stun you.

15 Yrs

2040

Tertiary Elegance · Mature Barolo

Forest floor, aged balsamic, white truffle, camphor, and dried Mediterranean herbs. The wine becomes ethereal — light in color, profound in flavor. Dunnuck's Mosconi window extends to 2045. Galloni describes the Sorì Ginestra as having "tons of finesse." At 15+ years, these are the bottles your future self will thank you for buying today.

Tip: Buy multiples of each cru. Open one now to know what you have. Then track the evolution every 2–3 years. The journey is half the joy.

2020 Conterno Fantino Sorì Ginestra Barolo

James Suckling · 97 Points

"Generous oak spices are in great harmony with the rich fruits and agile structure of this classic, memorable Barolo. Enticing cedar, cinnamon, iodine and sour cherry aromas meld with warm red cherries, cranberries and chalky mineral notes on an appropriately tannic texture. Best from 2030." (Jan 2024)

Vinous · Antonio Galloni · 96 Points

"Marries finesse with power, as can happen with the best sites here. Crushed flowers, orange peel, spice, mint, white pepper and tobacco lend notable aromatic presence. The 2020 starts easy, then explodes through the mid-palate and finish, showing notable textural depth and tons of finesse." (Jan 2024)

James Suckling · 96 Points

"A pretty, layered aroma and elegant, vibrant palate add up to greatness in this structured, complex and age-worthy wine. Balsam, rose petals, violets and cinnamon meet snappy sour cherry, raspberry and star anise on the palate. Best from 2028 and onwards." (Jan 2024)

Vinous · Antonio Galloni · 95 Points

"Ample and resonant. Marked by finessed tannins, likely a result of older vines. Dark and ample, with gorgeous textural depth. So expressive in this tasting. Another impeccable wine from Conterno-Fantino. Plum, blood orange, chalk and white pepper linger on the persistent finish." (Jan 2024)

2020 Conterno Fantino Castelletto Vigna Pressenda Barolo

James Suckling · 96 Points

"One of the richer, rounder and more mouth-filling Barolos, this expansive wine fills its nicely firm structure with intricate layers of red cherries, orange peel, raspberry and cedar. While full-bodied and broad in texture, it has the signature fine-grained tannins for improvement with time. Best from 2029 and beyond." (Jan 2024)

Vinous · Antonio Galloni · 94 Points

"A delicate, elegant wine. Crushed rose petal, orange peel, white pepper, mint and crushed rocks all grace this gorgeous, translucent Barolo. All the elements are so nicely balanced. There is a feeling of crystalline purity here that is simply beguiling. It is the most ethereal and perfumed of the Barolos here. The 2020 is all class." (Jan 2024)

Jeb Dunnuck · 96 Points

"Equally compelling. Layered notes of blood orange, apricot, roses, tea leaf, and wild raspberries. Savory on the palate, it has a noble structure, with outstanding definition and persistence. I'm impressed with the overall balance and finesse this wine has to offer. Drink 2025–2045." (May 2024)

Vinous · Antonio Galloni · 96 Points

"The most potent and tannic of these wines, but it retains the mid-weight signature of the year. Dark, ample and broad on the palate, the 2020 offers up a beguiling mix of dark fruit, leather, tobacco, incense, licorice and dried herbs. A complex, dynamic wine that constantly changes in the glass. Should provide exceptional drinking for the next 15–20 years. Classic Mosconi." (Jan 2024)
