of Carneros Most Producers Don't Have.
Most of Carneros sits on uplifted bay-bottom clay — ancient seabed soils that produce the rounder, fruit-forward Pinots the appellation is known for. Etude's Grace Benoist Ranch doesn't. Tucked into the southwestern-most corner of Sonoma, the estate is built on rare volcanic upland soils — rocky, well-drained, with five distinct soil types running across four small vineyards (Laniger, Deer Camp, Temblor, and Heirloom). That geological accident is what gives Etude's estate Pinots their structural spine and tension.
The 2022 brings together twenty distinct Pinot Noir vine selections from across the ranch, vinified parcel by parcel in small open-top fermenters with whole-cluster inclusion, then aged in French oak with only a small percentage of new barrels. The goal is the same as in great Burgundy: let the site speak.
It worked. James Suckling: 96 points. "Very well constructed, with underlying tension." Wine Spectator, Vinous, and Jeb Dunnuck all at 90+. Suckling's 96 is the highest single-vintage score the Etude estate Pinot has earned in recent memory — and it sits on the table at $37.97/btl by the case.
