A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

We hosted a Ciacci Piccolomini masterclass back in May, and the room turned into a feeding frenzy — every bottle of our allocation, gone. So we went back to the source and secured additional allocations pulled from their importer's New Jersey warehouse, brought in exclusively for our Artisans. That is the only reason any of the wines below exist on our shelves today.

For Ciacci, greatness is simply business as usual. Across just the current releases in this email: a perfect 100 from Falstaff, a 99 and two 98s from James Suckling — including his #3 Wine of Italy — and a dozen scores of 95 or better. Yet production remains minuscule: 35 hectares in the prized Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone, an estate left to the Bianchini family in 1985 by the heirless Countess Elda Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, still run by the brother-and-sister team of Paolo and Lucia.

And the timing could not be better: these bottles span 2019, 2020, and 2021 — the greatest run of vintages Montalcino has ever strung together. Lovers of Casanova di Neri, Siro Pacenti, and Valdicava have much to love here: the same polished, approachable-yet-ageworthy style, with iron-rich Pianrosso soul.

"From their 100-point Riserva, Suckling's #3 wine in all of Italy, to their $19.97 Super Tuscan — from one tiny estate. That's Ciacci for you."

James Tran
Why This Matters
95-100 points is routine here. A perfect 100, a 99, two 98s, a 97, and a stack of 95s and 96s — on the current releases alone. Few estates in Italy post numbers like this vintage after vintage.
The greatest vintages Montalcino has known. The elegant, perfumed 2021s; the opulent 2020s; the structured, five-star 2019s — this email covers all three, plus fresh 2024 values.
Minuscule production, iron-rich terroir. The famed Pianrosso ("red field") vineyard sits on heavy iron deposits at 240–360 meters; the 100-point Riserva is an 18,600-bottle wine made only in the best years.
This allocation exists only for you. Pulled from the importer's New Jersey warehouse after May's sellout — when these counts hit zero, there is no round three.

Falstaff
100 Points

"Aromas of ripe cherries, ripe strawberries, dried rose petals, a hint of sealing wax and fine tobacco notes. Very full-bodied, rich and engaging on the palate, great savouriness and juiciness, with a vibrant, powerful and long finish."

James Suckling
99 Points

"The ripe yet fresh aromas are so alluring and compelling, showing plums, cedar, rose petals and hints of leather. Full-bodied yet framed and tensioned with fantastic length and intensity... This is a monumental wine in many senses of the word. One for the cellar."

Jeb Dunnuck
97 Points

"Bright and savory, with anise, bergamot, dried Mediterranean herbs, and sweet spice woven through the fruit... a focused line of acidity, ripe tannins, and a long, mouthwatering finish that stays energetic and fresh. It should drink beautifully for 15 years or more. Drink 2026–2044." — Audrey Frick

The Bottom Line

May's frenzy emptied the shelves.
This is the encore — and the finale.

A 100-point Riserva down to its last 4 bottles. Suckling's #3 wine in all of Italy, down to 8. The equally rated 2021, the 96-point value Brunello, and estate wines from $19.97 — all pulled from the importer's warehouse for Artisans alone, all from the greatest vintages Montalcino has ever strung together.

If Casanova di Neri, Siro Pacenti, and Valdicava live in your cellar, Ciacci belongs beside them. When these counts hit zero, there is no round three.

Cheers,

— James Tran
