About the Vintage:

We are delighted with an interesting 2023 vintage! Even though we have experienced a challenging growing season with alternating warm and cool periods with some rain, we have had a fantastic harvest season with the best possible weather conditions for ripening. After a midsummery June and July, followed by high rainfall at the beginning of August, the grapes were able to benefit and ripen for a long time from the optimal conditions with plenty of sunshine. Harvest began late in early September with ideal weather conditions which were only replaced by more unstable weather towards the end. Warm daytime temperatures and cool nights allowed the grapes to reach optimum ripeness with balanced acidity levels and clear fruit, and good structure.

About the Vineyard:

Steep slopes with southeast and southwest orientation between 250 and 600m. An interplay of brisk mountain and warmer mid-level vineyards. Calcareous soils with clay, sand and porphyric parts. Handpicked with the utmost care.

Vinification:

After harvest, the grapes are carefully crushed and pressed. The fresh must is statically clarified at low temperatures and then gently fermented at a controlled temperature of 20°C in steel tanks. The young wine matures in steel tanks for several months on its fine lees.

Appellation: Alto Adige DOC
Residual sugar: 1,9 g/L
Alcohol: 13,00 % Vol.
Aging: 3-4 years
Total acidity: 5,8 g/L
Harvest: Entirely handpicked

Tasting Notes:

Our Pinot Grigio captivates with light straw yellow and fruity notes of ripe pears, white pepper and a bit of sage in the nose. Mineral- salty richness and a crisp acidity are distinctive on the palate. A wine with backbone!

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points, #33 Top 100 Of 2024 & Smart Buy - Wine Spectator
"Elegant, with an appealing, creamy nappe to the texture as it carries notes of ripe pear, peach skin, blood orange peel, green almond and orchard blossoms. A tangy streak of salinity and lively acidity focus and refresh the finely woven flavors and nicely spicy finish. Drink now through 2029. 8,400 cases made." - Alison Napjus (Oct 2024)

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Opening with the fresh aromas of cut apple, pear and a hint of green fig skin, this Pinot Grigio reveals a round and satisfying palate. A touch of cheesiness adds an intriguing layer of depth and umami, balancing the fruit with a savory edge. The finish is rounded, with notes of bitter almond and a subtle green undertone that perks up the senses." - Jeff Porter (Dec 2024)

About the Winery:
During the 1990’s Greg and Sue White decided to make a radical lifestyle change, shedding their corporate business suits to set sail on a 48-foot yacht named Chanticleer. Sheltering from the Pacific hurricane season in the beautiful waters of the Marlborough Sounds, they were inspired by the beauty of the region. The couple decided a Marlborough winery was the sort of project to see them return to dry land, so in 1994 they established Whitehaven – named for the importance of family, and memorializing the calm port ‘haven’ they’d found while anchoring in Marlborough. (The distinctive anchor insignia seen on the Whitehaven label forever connects Whitehaven to its nautical beginnings.)

About this Wine:
The fruit for this wine comes exclusively from Marlborough and is certified with Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW). A mix of company owned or managed vineyards, and contract grower vineyards, vines are pruned to between two and four canes on a vertical shoot positioned trellis. Shoot thinning, leaf plucking and trimming are used to achieve balanced vines, a healthy canopy and clean fruit.

The fruit was machine harvested, often overnight, and pressed immediately with minimal skin contact.  After settling, the clear juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at 16°C – 12°C with selected yeast strains to preserve pure sub regional characters and varietal flavours.  Wines sat on light yeast lees in tank for up to 6 weeks prior to blending in June 23. The wine has been heat and cold stabilised, and sterile filtered, prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Pale lemon.

Aroma: Classical Marlborough with aromas of grapefruit, lemongrass and crushed herbs underscored with complexing hints of tropical fruits and gooseberry.

Palate: Pure and concentrated with flavours of grapefruit, white peach, lemongrass and boxwood and citrus with oyster shell and saline notes promoting a focussed textural element.  Medium bodied, the palate is layered and dense yet retains elegance with a lingering precise finish.

Cellaring: We recommend drinking our 2023 Sauvignon Blanc while it is young and fresh, but the wine is capable of developing nicely beyond five years if carefully cellared.

Food Match: A perfect accompaniment to oysters and fresh seafood, Japanese cuisine, summer salads, light poultry and goat’s cheese.

Alcohol: 13.0%

Ratings & Reviews

90 Points, #41 Top 100 Of 2024 - Wine Spectator:
"White pepper, lemon blossom and fresh ginger notes are vibrant and expressive, with a mouthwatering core of lime, pomelo, lemon balm and lemongrass lingering on the finish. Drink now." - MW (Oct 2024)

Vinous Media:
"The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is pure, clean and aromatic. Dry and zesty, it provides pristine fruit flavors akin to lime, lemongrass and passion fruit. Light-bodied with modest concentration of flavor and fleeting length, it's nevertheless a balanced, punchy style that will be widely enjoyed by the glass in the summer months." - Rebecca Gibb MW (Apr 2024)

Tenuta di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020
Original Price: $49.99

Tenuta di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020
(Tuscany, Italy) - [WS 94, #24 Top 100 of 2023] [JS 93] [JD 92]

About the Wienry:

Tenuta di Arceno is an ancient Tuscan estate with a diverse portfolio of the highest quality wines across two classification levels – three wines centered on the native Sangiovese grape in the Chianti Classico DOCG collection; and three wines celebrating the estate’s international varieties under the Toscana IGT designation. The estate is situated at the southernmost-edge of Chianti Classico, closest in proximity to Siena and rightfully referred to as ‘the most Senese Chianti Classico.

The estate is 1,000 total hectares (2,500 acres) of which 90 hectares (220 acres) are planted to vines – the remaining land is preserved for native vegetation including 50 hectares (125 acres) of olive orchards. Separated into 63 distinct vineyard blocks, the vineyards are planted to 50% Sangiovese and 50% international varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Notes from the Winemaker:

The Chianti Classico Riserva comes from some of the warmer, south-facing blocks at the estate. It is composed almost entirely of Sangiovese and spends one year in small French oak barrels. This is the epitome of modern Chianti with its dark color, pure fruit, balance, power and velvety tannins. The dominant flavors include violets, plums, cherries, orange peel, earth, licorice, cedar and smoke.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points, #24 Top 100 of 2023 - Wine Spectator:
"A supple, fluid red marked by flavors of macerated cherry, raspberry and boysenberry. Well-structured, with flashes of graphite and tobacco as this builds to the long, compact finish. All the components are there, this just needs time. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2042. 6,100 squares made, 4,453 squares imported." - BS (Oct 2023)

94 Points - Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com:
"Cherries, raspberries, currants, white chocolate, magnolias and gardenias describe the primary profile of this solid, elegant Riserva. Medium to full bodied, soft tannins and a truly tasty, modern finish. Better from 2025." - Raffaele Vecchione

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Aromas of cherry chocolate, dried orange peel, rose petals and nutmeg on the nose, following through to a medium body with crunchy tannins and polished texture. Hints of fresh cherries and dried flowers with crushed stone character at the end. Drink or hold." (Jul 2023)

92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
Magenta with a tinge of purple, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a darker mineral profile in its notes of graphite, blackberry, lavender, and sweet sage. Full-bodied, it has wonderful length, and its more primary fruit profile weaves seamlessly through its mineral-tinged backbone and mouthwatering finish. Although it’s not a bright wine in terms of its acidity, it’s certainly fresh and is a very attractive wine from this vintage with the potential to cruise over the next 10- 12 years. (Drink between 2024-2036)

92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
From the warmer, south-facing sites of the Castelnuovo Berardenga-based estate, this Riserva spends 12 months in small French oak and includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, which together lend coffee and intense dark fruits to the fragrant fresh and dried cherries courtesy of the Sangiovese. A herbal note combines with soft, chalky tannins and good acidity, with licks of wood, cream and zingy raspberry on the long finish. Still quite closed, this would benefit from a bit more time before opening.

Poggio San Polo Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2020

Poggio San Polo Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2020
(Tuscany, Italy) - [JS 91] [WS 90, #72 Top 100 of 2023] [TWI 90]

About the winery:

In 2007, Marilisa Allegrini (of the Veneto's esteemed Allegrini winery!) and Leonardo LoCascio (head of US importer Winebow) purchased the property, and brought in winemaker Nicola Biasi to build on San Polo's already considerable reputation and impressive levels of quality: Poggio San Polo's Brunello di Montalcino have consistently achieved outstanding ratings since the 1997 vintage.

The vineyards at San Polo were planted between 1990 and 2000 with the goal of making the highest quality Brunello di Montalcino. With an altitude of 1350 feet above sea level, their southern facing vineyard receives optimal sun exposure and is the highest in Montalcino. The vineyard also has natural terraces facing the stunning Sant'Antimo Valley and is entirely dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Rosso di Montalcino represents a valid alternative to 'Brunello' and combines a particular vivaciousness, tanginess and freshness with a well-crafted structure. This wine is best enjoyed young, but has good ageing potential.

Tasting Notes
Bright and glossy ruby red in colour. On the nose it reveals aromas of small fresh berries and a trace of morello cherry, melded with hints of blackberries and black cherries, followed by a hint of vanilla. A fragrant wine with satisfying intensity. On the palate it is warm, smooth and a medium-bodied with finely-balanced tannins. Dry and sinewy yet fresh with a persistent, aromatic finish.

Food Pairings
It naturally accompanies dishes that are typical of Tuscan cuisine with its bold, authentic flavors, such as pasta and risottos made with mushrooms or truffles, pork, grilled meats and medium-matured cheeses. Serve in large glasses at 18°C (65°F) in large glasses.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling:
"Savory plums, strawberries, red cherries with Mediterranean herbs and spices extend to a medium-bodied palate showing firm yet fruit-coated tannins. Juicy, fruity and pristine." (Aug 2022)

90 Points, #72 Top 100 of 2023 - Wine Spectator:
"This lithe, elegant red is signaled by a burst of raspberry aromas and flavors. Shows iron and earth details as this firms up, before stretching out on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2027. 7,494 cases imported." - BS (Sep 2023)

90 Points - The Wine Independent:
"The 2020 San Polo Rosso di Montalcino has aromas of mixed fruit and leaves or green herbs with a hint of leather as well. The palate is medium-bodied with some crunchy green and red fruit flavors as well as strawberries in syrup, but this is balanced by fresh acidity and quite chunky tannins." - Susan Hulme (Feb 2023)

Wine Advocate:
"The organic 2020 Rosso di Montalcino (with 40,000 bottles made) offers a bright bouquet with tart cherry, cassis and pretty floral tones of violet and lavender. The wine is simple and vibrant, showing a focus on the basics. Don't look for complexity here, but do count on a very fun and easy taste of Tuscany to pair with your favorite Italian foods." - Monica Larner (Mar 2023)

Miguel Torres Vigno Vignadores de Carignan 2018

Miguel Torres Vigno Vignadores de Carignan 2018
(Maule Valley, Chile) - [WS 92, #44 Top 100 Of 2023] [VM 90]

About the Winery:
Familia Torres, a renowned winemaking family with roots in Spain, has been producing wines for 151 years over 5 generations. In 1979, Familia Torres arrived in Chile. Pioneers in the region, they were the first foreign winery to arrive in the country, kickstarting a new era in the quality of Chilean wines.

About this Wine:
Historical records show that Carignan was brought to Chile between 1928 and 1947 to complement wines made from the País variety. For decades, it languished in blends of bulk wine until the 1980s, when Miguel Torres, with its recently introduced stainless steel tanks, set out to revive the variety. And so, in 1996, Miguel Torres unveiled its first Carignan under the Cordillera label, marking the first chapter in the history of one of our most renowned wines. Producers working with the variety quickly realized the undeniable quality of Carignan wines, inspiring them to join forces in 2009 to establish Chile’s first appellation wine.

In 2010, the producers—including Miguel Torres— signed their first declaration of shared commitments, and VIGNO began taking shape. The goal of VIGNO is to better position the Maule Valley by setting it apart through the development and production of character-driven wines that originate from old vines grown in dryland conditions. Today, VIGNO is an association of 14 growers. Wines produced as VIGNO must be from dry-farmed vineyards only and vines must be at least 30 years old. Wines must be produced from at least 80% Carignan grape and aged at least 3 years before released.

Tasting Notes:
Opaque, intense ruby red color. Floral and fruit aromas with toasty oak imparted undertones. The palate is big and unfolds beautifully. Here the notes perceived on the nose are complemented by hints of bay leaf and mint.

Ratings & Reviews:

92 Points, #44 Top 100 Of 2023 - Wine Spectator:
"Elegant and complex, this red bursts with notes of plumeria, picking up hints of bay leaf, red currant, raspberry and blood orange. Fresh acidity activates additional layers of chalky minerality and toasty spice, backed by mineral-tinged tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 3,500 cases made, 2,000 cases imported." - AR (May 2023)

90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2018 Carignan Vigno from Maule spent 12 months in foudres. Purple in color. The nose offers maraschino cherry and sour cherry liqueur, meadowy aromas and a gentle oaky backdrop. Juicy with firm tannins, it's a little ethereal and limited in flavor, with a fresh, slightly tartaric core before the throat-tickling finish." - Joaquin Hidalgo (Jun 2022)
