About the Wine:

This wine is a result of a partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild to create a Bordeaux style blend in Napa Valley.

Tasting Notes:

The 1993 Opus One presents a deep velvety red with a hint of purple.  Showing good structure and a delicate integration of French oak, the wine’s very complex nose offers scents of clove and black currant.  As in previous vintages of Opus One, the 1993 is a stylish wine marked by superior finesse and uncommon elegance.

Vintage:

Abundant rainfall throughout the winter and spring provided favorable moisture to the vines over the growing season. Due to variable temperatures during flowering, the size of both the berries and the crop were slightly smaller than average. In late August and early September, the weather was cool at night, bringing some morning fog. As a result, our fruit was able to reach maturity at an ideal pace, arriving at Opus One in mid-September. The wine shows complex aromatics and supple tannins.

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Decanter:
"This has wonderful spice and depth but drops off just a little quicker than some. 42 days skin contact, variable weather during flowering so a difficult fruit set and low crop numbers in the end. A cool August allowed for long slow ripening, and there are layers of liquorice and slate notes adding complexity through the mid-palate. (Drink between 2019-2034)" —Jane Anson (Sept 2019)

90 Points - Vinous Media:
"The fruit is front and center in this bold, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon. Slight elements of brett detract from the wine's balance, but the 1993 has enough depth to drink well for at least another decade, if not considerably longer. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot. (Drink between 2013-2023)." —Antonio Galloni (June 2013)
