About the Winery:
Carlisle is a small Sonoma County winery specializing in the production of old-vine, vineyard designated Zinfandels and red Rhône varieties (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah). They also produce three delicious white wines, two of which are blends from historic, old-vine vineyards plus Sonoma County's first ever Grüner Veltliner.

About this Wine:
Papera Ranch is a grande dame of the Russian River Valley, planted in 1934 by Celestino (Charlie) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% Zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of Carignan with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this is one of the winery's later Zinfandel vineyards to be picked.

In this low yielding year, this vineyard was a bit of a bright spot with production of 2.4 tons to the acre.  Picked in four passes over a total of nine days, the winery's goal was to create as broad a palette of flavors and aromas as possible for blending the final wine.  The strategy worked so well that in doing blending trials, their favorite blend was the combination of all tanks.  The kitchen sink!  Like many of Carlisle's wines in this vintage, very little new oak - only 10% to be exact. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes:
Medium to medium-dark ruby-red. Very cool, stately aromas of red cherry, cola, and fresh tobacco leaf. On the palate, medium-full bodied. Flavors of red fruits and blood orange take front and center stage, persisting through the long, smooth finish. Not a wine of bombast but instead, one of elegance, purity, and quiet confidence. Wonderful now, this can be enjoyed through at least 2028.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Few Zinfandels show this much nuance and detail, yet there's an elegant power to this red, with cherry and raspberry flavors that mingle with orange peel and fresh sage. Ends with refined tannins. Drink now through 2032. 854 cases made." - TF (web only 2023)

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is ripe with fresh berries, raspberry preserve, and baking spice. Its gushy fruit up front gives way to a note of raspberry seed and refreshing lift on the finish. Drink 2023-2032." (Aug 2022)

91 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2020 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is a powerful wine. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of red/purplish fruit. Savory, floral and earthy notes add quite a bit of character. This potent Russian River Zinfandel packs quite the punch. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural breadth and resonance, much of that attributable to the 15% mixed blacks that includes a number of varieties that confer structure." - Antonio Galloni (1/2021)
