About the Winery:
Beringer is known for establishing many 'firsts' as leaders in the wine industry. They were one of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars. They were the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition. They are also the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine. Now in its third century of crafting classic wines from Napa's finest appellations and vineyards, Beringer today is guided by the inspired partnership of celebrated Winemaster Emeritus Ed Sbragia and Winemaker Laurie Hook. Together, they craft Napa Valley wines that speak eloquently of the rich heritage of the Beringer Vineyard, while offering cutting-edge quality and contemporary elegance.

About these Wines:
To make these small-production Private Reserve wines, fifth-generation winemaker Mark Beringer chooses the best lots from the winery's reserve vineyards in the Napa Valley, each demonstrating a different aspect of Napa’s prized terroir. Beringer’s Private Reserve wines have become famous as one of the truest expressions of a given vintage.

Technical Information

Winemaking:
The Beringer reserve vineyards offer Cabernet Sauvignon of such quality that a minimalist approach to winemaking has long defined this special blend. Each vineyard is vinified separately and monitored carefully from the moment the fruit comes into the winery at Harvest. Tailored pump-over techniques are used for optimal extraction, and the wine is aged in hand-selected, custom-toasted barrels of new French oak (~80% new). Each lot was aged for 20 months before selection of the final blend, to allow each vineyard to express the depth of its unique terroir.

Vineyards:
Percentages change with each vintage, but Steinhauer Ranch (20-25%), Bancroft Ranch (20-25%), Pauli (10-15%) and Marc Mondavi Ranch (~5%) vineyards atop Howell Mountain provide the foundation.

2016: 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot

2017:  96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot

2018: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot

Ratings & Reviews

2016 Vintage
99 Points - James Suckling:
"Breathtaking. Exceptional integration of super ripe blackberries and the very finest oak. The tannins build up beautifully, forming wave upon wave as the wine flows across the palate. Then the wave breaks on your palate and shoots way out at the finish, so that you wonder where it will end and normal life begin again. Needs time to soften, but this is so, so good." (2/2019)

97+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"As with the 2015, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve shows the vintage beautifully and is more pure, classic, and elegant. Notes of crme de cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings, and freshly crushed rocks give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless Cabernet that has remarkable purity of fruit and impeccable balance." (1/2019)

2017 Vintage
98 Points & #8 Top 100 Wines of 2020 - James Suckling:
“This shows really beautiful purity of fruit with polish and sophistication. The currant and cassis aromas are so enticing and really reflect the name of the wine. Medium to full body. Extremely fine tannins. Shows a level of freshness and agility that caresses the palate. Delicate and beautiful. Mostly Howell Mountain. Drink or hold.” (Feb 2020)

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is brilliant, with a ripe, powerful style that’s going to age gracefully. Deep blackcurrants, dark chocolate, scorched earth, and graphite notes all emerge from this concentrated, powerful Cabernet that has ripe tannins, a big, rich mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for upwards of two decades with no issues."  (Feb 2020)

2018 Vintage:
98 Points - James Suckling:
" Wild blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, tobacco and dark spice on the nose. Dried violets, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins and a creamy texture. Intense, yet restrained and refined, with a solid core of dark berries and bitter chocolate. Really focused and crafted with exemplary Napa cabernet character. Try from 2024." (Jan 2021)

97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is based on 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 90% new French oak. It’s a beautiful wine that shows the vintage’s pure, elegant, yet concentrated style perfectly. Gorgeous crème de cassis, violets, blueberries, and cedar pencil notes emerge from the glass, and this beauty builds incrementally on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a lively, pure, layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20-25 years." (1/27/2021)
