Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs
A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

Crossbarn is Paul Hobbs's second label, named after the barn on his family's fruit farm in upstate New York. The wines are not made from leftovers. The 2022 Pinot Noir is 100% estate fruit, drawn from four of the same Sonoma Coast vineyards he bottles individually under his flagship label at $135 to $165 a bottle. The Chardonnay is 81% estate. The Napa Cabernet comes off Coombsville and Calistoga parcels — the same neighbourhoods that feed the Hobbs Cabernets on the back half of this email at $120 and $350.

Same fruit sources. Same hands. A fraction of the price — because the label on the front is the second one rather than the first. For the next 24 hours we have taken them down further still: $29.99, $24.99 and $49.99.

Below the three Crossbarns you will find the rest of what we carry from the Hobbs world — Finger Lakes Riesling, Galician Mencía, Mendoza Malbec, and the Coombsville Cabernets that make the case for the whole operation.

"Readers will have a very hard time finding a Pinot with this much quality for the money. All of the fruit is estate."

And Yes, This Is That Paul Hobbs

Mondavi → Opus One → Simi → his own name, 1991.

Robert Mondavi hired him for his work on oak ageing. He was then appointed to the inaugural winemaking team at Opus One, the Mondavi and Rothschild joint venture, before moving to Simi. He founded Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991 and Viña Cobos in Argentina in 1999 — having already been working with Nicolas Catena there since the late 1980s.

Robert Parker named him Wine Personality of the Year twice. He owns or runs seven wineries across four continents, from Sebastopol to Seneca Lake to Ribeira Sacra to Mendoza. The $24.99 Chardonnay below comes from the same cellar as all of it.

"Lots of dried strawberry, umami, seaweed, and bark with some savory undertones. Some flowers. Medium body. Creamy and flavorful. Lovely deliciousness at the end. It's made from different parts of Paul Hobbs' top vineyards — George Menini Estate, Cleary Estate, Goldrock Estate, and Catherine Lindsay Estate. Drink now." Nov 2023

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
93 Points

"The 2022 Pinot Noir, made entirely with estate fruit, calls you into the glass with perfumed cranberry and pomegranate, accents of sweet baking spices, autumn leaves and generous floral tones. The light-bodied palate offers a deep core of spicy fruit supported by gently chalky tannins and mouthwatering acidity, and it has a long, bright finish." Erin Brooks, Dec 2023

Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2022 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is youthful, ripe magenta/ruby hue and is inviting as it opens to pretty notes of pie spice, cherry liqueur, and crushed roses. It is clean and inviting on the palate, with lovely elegance, a refined feel, and great freshness through the finish. It's pretty darn tasty now but can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years." Audrey Frick, June 2024

"A fresh, fruity, juicy, crisp white that's generous in green apples, baked apples and minerals on a medium body. Subtle flavors of cream and butter come from partial malolactic conversion while maturing in stainless steel containers. Screw cap." June 2025

"The 2024 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is a bright silver/yellow hue with a touch of youthful spritz and aromas of lime leaf, lemon verbena, white pepper, fresh pear, and green apple. Fermented entirely in steel with bâtonnage, it has a subtle creaminess while remaining refreshing and energetic. A terrific value to enjoy now or over the next several years. Drink 2026-2030."

Wine Enthusiast
91 Points

"Aromas of fresh lemon, apple blossom, and green apple flow from the glass on the nose of this approachable wine. The palate has tropical energy, with pineapple and spice mingling with citrus and nectarine flavors, with a long, acid-driven finish."

Vinous: "The 2024 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is bright, airy and very much understated in style. Lemon peel, white pepper and white flowers are all nicely lifted. This is an especially floral, aromatic Chardonnay. Vinification and aging is done mostly in steel, which keeps the flavors brisk."

Wine Advocate: "Made with 81% estate fruit, the 2024 Chardonnay has fresh aromas of red apples and pears, lemon peel, bread dough and spice. The medium-bodied palate is easygoing with ripe flavors, vibrant acidity and a long, flavorful finish." Erin Brooks, Aug 2025

Wine Three · The 2021 Napa Cabernet
2021 Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Coombsville and Calistoga fruit. Five critics, 92 to 94 points, in the vintage everyone wanted.
2021 Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

2021 is the Napa Cabernet vintage collectors have been chasing since release. This one is drawn from Coombsville and Calistoga parcels and aged in only 13% new oak — which is why Wine Advocate remarks that the quality of the fruit is what comes through. Five critics landed it between 92 and 94.

"Night harvested by hand, then cold-soaked for 5 days, before a 30-day maceration, native yeast fermented, aged 18 months in 13% new oak, bottled unfined. Incredibly fragrant notes of bay laurel, black olive, dried sage, and sandalwood lift out of the glass. Wonderfully vibrant and fresh, and full on the palate, with dark berry fruits and chocolaty notes mingling with the aromatic bay laurel to create a minty through line, resolving with chalky tannins and earth notes tinged with a lingering bright and zesty spice character."

James Suckling
94 Points

"A juicy and flavorful red with real Napa character from vineyards in Calistoga and Coombsville. Medium-bodied with juicy fruit and a flavorful finish. Currant and hints of mint. But reserved and focused. Shows tension. Drink or hold."

Wine Spectator
93 Points

"An alluring red, with a menthol note out front, followed by a slow-moving core of boysenberry and blackberry reduction flavors. Shows ample anise and bramble through the grippy, toasty finish, where the menthol note takes an encore. Best from 2025 through 2035. 8,900 cases made."

Wine Advocate  ·  Wine Enthusiast
92 Points Each

Wine Advocate: "Blended from Coombsville and Calistoga fruit, Crossbarn's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a terrific bargain, made by Paul Hobbs. It's purple-fruited, with scents of cassis, blackberries and blueberries framed by hints of vanilla and cedar. With just 8% new French oak, the quality of the fruit really shines through."

Wine Enthusiast: "Mouthwatering and flavorful, this satisfying Cabernet Sauvignon greets the palate with flavors of black plum, wet tobacco, and dark hot chocolate. Powdery palate coating tannins enliven a spiced and lengthy, long finish."
