A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
This is one of those offers where I don’t even know how to begin. I’m still in shock that I’ve tasted three of the greatest wines of my lifetime, and that I can offer them to you. It is our first Cayuse offer.
These unicorns are nearly impossible to get in any meaningful quantity. Their director of sales, Jeff Von Bargen, told me the mailing list is maxed out at 15,000 people, with 10,000 more waiting, and no one gets off their lists. The wait was already eight to nine years back in 2019; it is longer now. There’s a reason: Over 40 of 99- and 100-point scores across Baron’s wines. And only a few hundred cases are made of the Hors Catégorie and the High Contrast; fewer than 900 of the Cailloux.
But I got to sit down with Jeff to taste them, and to get access for you. Here is the lineup we tasted.
The Cayuse and Horsepower bottles we tasted at Artisan
The lineup we tasted
These are three profound Syrahs from Christophe Baron’s Cayuse family that immediately jumped to the top: the most magically complex, singular, unique, exotic, otherworldly-textured, intoxicatingly fragrant, crazy wines I’ve had. Our sentiment is echoed by the critics. James Suckling, on the Hors Catégorie: “This is a crazy wine, purely mineral.”
It is completely worth owning all three. They were kaleidoscopic upon tasting right now, but they will age magically for 30 years if you are inclined; Jeb Dunnuck’s team gives the Hors Catégorie 20 to 30 years.
And they are LOW ABV, the Cailloux at 13.8% and the Horsepower at 13.6%, yet so powerful and complex. These are built to evolve like crazy.
The Field Of Stones
Christophe Baron found the place almost by accident. Visiting the Walla Walla Valley in 1996, he spotted a freshly plowed field strewn with stones the size of softballs, and he got ridiculously excited. The stony ground reminded him of vineyards he knew in France and Spain, and he knew what it would do: stress the vines into giving riper, more concentrated fruit.
He bought the land and planted his first vineyard, Cailloux, in 1997. Christophe Baron had found a new home.
The Rocks District Of Milton-Freewater
The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater is the most exciting and unique terroir not just in the United States, but in the entire world. It is the only AVA in the United States whose boundaries were determined by a single land form and a single soil series: the cobblestones you see below.
The cobblestone soils of the Rocks District
The stones: Milton-Freewater cobbles
Hors Catégorie: America’s Hermitage
The Hors Catégorie is equal to or better than the Hermitage of Jean-Louis Chave and Chapoutier, and the Cornas of Thierry Allemand.
It is a tiny parcel, about two and a half acres, on fractured basalt with slopes as steep as 60%. The grade is too steep for standard tractors, so cultivation is done by hand or with machinery winched between the rows. The name means “beyond categorization.” Wine Spectator called its resemblance to Hermitage “uncanny.”

Cailloux: The Prettiest
The Cayuse Cailloux Vineyard Syrah compares to, or outclasses, Jamet, Guigal’s La La’s and the Côte-Rôties of Rostaing, with the Viognier in it. So profoundly pretty. Vinous: “You can literally taste the rocky terrain in this wine.”
Cailloux was Cayuse’s first vineyard, planted in 1997 in the stones of Milton-Freewater. The reviews below are for the 2023, and they describe the 2024 as well.
Horsepower: Plowed By Horses
Horsepower is Christophe Baron’s return to the farming of his family’s Champagne vineyards: its tightly spaced vines are plowed by Belgian and Percheron draft horses, owned and managed by Christophe Baron, instead of tractors. The High Contrast is as good as, or better than, the Cornas of Thierry Allemand and Clape.
Intense power and perfume, and, as Owen Bargreen puts it, “Very meaty and stony.” Mind-bending complexity.

Owen Bargreen · On The 2023
98 Points
The prettiest, Northern Rhone-inspired bottling of the Cayuse lineup, the 2023 ‘Cailloux Vineyard’ a small portion of Viognier blended in. Stored for 18 months in primarily neutral oak puncheons, the wine comes from vines planted all the way back in 1997. This comes off wonderfully lifted from the Viognier, offering faint honeysuckle tones alongside pomegranate seed, smoked pork shoulder and wet stone accents on the nose. The palate is very laden with finesse, showing a gorgeous purity of red fruits, alongside tangerine peel and stony essence. Glorious now, watch this evolve over the next ten years. Drink 2026-2036. March 2026
James Suckling · On The 2023
96 Points
Very floral with an intriguing range of aromas from white to purple flowers. Medium-bodied, showing crushed red raspberries, black cherries, blackberries and pink and green peppercorns. Gets more umami after the finish. From a single vineyard planted in 1997. Drink or hold. May 2026
Vinous · Eric Guido · On The 2023
95 Points
The 2023 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard is savory and exotic in the glass, blending incense with pine shavings, mentholated herbs and brined olives. It sweeps across the palate, cool-toned and refined, with a silken wave of ripe blackberry fruit enhanced by a salty mineral core, while hints of graphite add further complexity toward the close. Sage mingles with inner rosy florals and a subtle tannic tinge as the 2023 finishes with extreme length and freshness. You can literally taste the rocky terrain in this wine. Fantastic. Drink between 2028-2039. July 2026

100 Points
I really loved this wine in 2022, and I love it just as much, if not more, with the 2023. Inky, dark, and brooding, the 2023 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard excels at capturing a wild place in a long vintage, with bright underlying acidity that complements the high-toned red fruit and citrus. There’s grip to the tannins and tension for days, but the white and black pepper is what really captures its varietal perfection beside the beautiful perfume and undeniable complexity. This should age for decades; enjoy 2028-2043. April 2026
Owen Bargreen
97 Points
The 2023 Horsepower Vineyards ‘High Contrast Vineyard’ Syrah comes from this location that is set on both ancient cobblestones and silty loam soils. Stored for 15 months in natural oak, this shows good nerve on the mouth, loaded with stony character alongside sea salt dusted smoked meats, green peppercorns and shades of cassis and Arabica bean alongside loamy soils and Parma ham. Very meaty and stony, this is a gorgeous rendition of the wine that will cellar well over the next decade. Drink 2025-2033. November 2025
Vinous · Eric Guido
96 Points
The 2023 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard starts out coy in the glass, wafting up notes of sweet smoke and violet pastille. Coaxing reveals a darker core of black cherries, cloves and cedar spice box. This wine is seductive in texture, silken and nearly weighty, with a solid core of ripe wild berry fruits for balance, all complicated by hints of tart citrus toward the close. It finishes with excellent length and poise, structured yet not severe, leaving nuances of tart blackberry and licorice to linger incredibly long. Drinking Window: 2028-2039. July 2026
James Suckling
96 Points
Rich and savory, with aromas of umami, iron, graphite and grilled meat. Super minerally and intense, with lingering flavors of cocktail bitters and grapefruit pith. Drink or hold. April 2026
Wine Spectator · Tim Fish
95 Points
A Syrah with verve and detail, this red offers handsome flavors of blackberry and blueberry framed by black olive, crushed stone and licorice notes that gather tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2037. 465 cases made. November 2026

Tasting Note
Ancient cobblestones and silty loam lend the 2023 High Contrast Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, its striking tension, framing a wine of formidable depth with uncommon lift… Its meaty savor and mineral character feel inseparable from the site, while the texture remains polished and persistent, carrying the concentration without excess weight… This is a profound young Syrah with the structure and pedigree to evolve gracefully for at least 15 years or more with proper cellaring. Highly recommended.

100 Points
Every bit a world-class wine, the 2022 Hors Categorie Syrah is reminiscent of the gorgeous 2017 edition. The aromatics are mind-numbing in terms of range from menthol, sweet pipe tobacco, Nori and bulls blood alongside shades of compost and black truffle shavings with black florals that all meld in the glass. The palate has formidable power considering the coolness of the vintage. Very flinty and soft on the mouth, this is seamless throughout the drinking experience. The amalgamation of tension and mouth-watering acidity alongside heady stony essence makes this impossible to put down. One of the few prefect wines made in 2022, savor this beauty over the next decade. Drinking Window: 2025-2035. March 2025
Vinous · Eric Guido
99 Points
The 2022 Syrah is expressive, with potent fragrances of crushed black raspberries, cassis, sweet violets, lavender and spice. The palate is juicy in style with fresh acidity, crisp wild berry fruits and blue and purple inner florals. A distinct pepperiness saturates toward the close. The close is tannic with tart blackberry and pleasantly bitter notes of blood orange and spice. Drinking Window: 2028-2044. June 2026
Jeb Dunnuck · Virginie Boone
98 Points
From the producer’s high-elevation site (the top reaches 1,492 feet) steeply planted in fractured basalt with up to a 60% slope, this is where the north and south forks of the Walla Walla River come together. It was planted in 2011 to just 2.2 acres of vineyard. Given 90 to 100% whole-cluster fermentation, the 2022 Syrah is earthy in blackberry bramble, graphite, and meaty lavender, with outstanding finesse beneath its understated power and sublimely velvety texture. Farmed biodynamically since the beginning, the vineyard sustains a pasture of goats, sheep, cows, and beehives below, inviting biodiversity. Age this wine 20-30 years. Drinking Window: 2025-2055. July 2025
James Suckling
98 Points
This is a crazy wine, purely mineral, showing aromas and flavors of pine cones, juniper berries, thyme, scorched earth, charcoal and graphite. It’s full-bodied and immensely tarry, with firm, tight tannins. Spicy, earthy and very long. Around 90% stems included. From biodynamically grown grapes on a very steep slope of up to 60 degrees. Approach from 2029. March 2025
Wine Advocate · Erin Brooks
96 Points
The 2022 Syrah comes from vines planted in 2011 on steep slopes of fractured basalt, which are meticulously (and biodynamically) farmed. Matured for 18 months in used French oak, it has pure, arresting scents of blackcurrant and black cherry, cracked pepper, violet and iron-like undertones. Medium-bodied, it floods the mouth with expressive, floral flavors. It has a powerful frame of velvety tannins, bright acidity and a long, fragrant finish. It should be long lived in the cellar. 313 cases were made. Drinking Window: 2030-2045. June 2026
