"East Coast retail wine guy starts to feel the pull towards actual vineyards and winemaking, wanting to put his passion into practice. He and his wife make their way out west, where he attends viticulture/enology school and works at vineyards in California. Then he scores an apprenticeship in Oregon's Willamette Valley under Russ Raney, whose Evesham Wood property, first planted in 1986, was a model of sustainability and small-scale perfectionism (Certified Organic in 2000). Over the years, Nuccio becomes winemaker at Evesham Wood, while also launching a brand called Haden Fig, and in 2010 Nuccio and his wife, Jordan, purchased Evesham Wood. They are always among the finest domestic Pinot Noir values we find each year."

"Russ and Mary Raney founded Evesham Wood in 1986, planting the first vines in Le Puits Sec Vineyard in 1989. Raney began farming organically in the early 1990s and earned organic certification in 2000. As part of The Deep Roots Coalition, a group of over 30 wineries, they have pledged to not irrigate estate fruit nor purchase irrigated fruit. In 2007 Erin Nuccio began making his own wine (Haden Fig) at Evesham while working there. When Team Raney chose to retire, Nuccio took over Evesham Wood in 2010 and has done an extremely impressive job following up the excellent quality produced by the Raneys. All the wines are unfined and unfiltered."

"Le Puits Sec is the main estate vineyard at Evesham Wood, planted by founder Russ Rainey in 1986 on its own roots, with additional plantings in 1991 to three different Dijon clone Pinot Noirs. It's certified organic and dry-farmed. Elegance abounds in the aromatics, with a melange of fresh red berries, blood orange and resonant notes of forest floor. Stunning on the palate with mouthfuls of fresh woodland berry fruits, dashes of savoury mint and soaring notes of fresh cranberry and spicy blood orange. Exotic spices lead the finish with touches of sea salt. 2025–2035. Burgundy, eat your heart out."

"Dark raspberry and orange zest aromas make for a lovely perfume, but it's the notes of pine needles and crunchy dried oak leaves that make you lean in for more. With energetic acidity, silky tannins and a perfect sense of balance, the Le Puits Sec is like slipping on a pair of nicely broken in calfskin gloves.
