A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
Antonio Galloni tasted the 2014 Comtes de Champagne and was reminded of the mighty 2008. It comes across, he wrote, as “a mini-2008,” and he signed off with five words: “What an absolute delight.”
James Suckling gave it 99 points. Jeb Dunnuck’s Audrey Frick found the mousse “pillow-like, powdery, and perfumed.”
With autumn in full swing and the festive season on the horizon, there is no better time to stock up on exceptional Champagne.
Only 1,500 Cases
This is the part I really need you to understand. Wine Spectator reports that only 1,500 cases of the 2014 Comtes were imported into the United States. For the whole country.
This is not a tête de cuvée made by the millions. Taittinger makes roughly 100,000 bottles of Comtes worldwide, and not every vintage. America’s share of the 2014 is 1,500 cases.
Both The Pundits And The People Agree
The critics: James Suckling 99, Vinous 97, and 96 from Decanter, Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. The collectors on CellarTracker say the same. One wrote: “One glass and I am transported to heaven!” Another, tasting it at the house: “Best champagne from the trip… A profound wine.”
Drink It Now, Or Through 2054
Every critic says the same thing: it is lovely now, and it will keep. Wine Advocate’s drinking window runs to 2054, Jeb Dunnuck’s to 2050 and Vinous’s to 2044. Antonio Galloni: “The 2014 can be enjoyed now or cellared.” James Suckling: “Drink or hold.”
The Cuvée
Taittinger created Comtes de Champagne in 1952 as its most exclusive cuvée, in honour of the Counts of Champagne and in particular Thibaud IV, whose seal is on every bottle. It is only Chardonnay, and only from the grand crus of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger.
