The Vineyard

Napa's Best-Kept Secret.
Hidden in Plain Sight Among
the Most Famous Vineyards on Earth.

Vine Hill Ranch is one of the most historically significant vineyard properties in Oakville — a 200-acre estate that has been farmed by the Phillips family since 1957. The vineyard sits in the absolute heart of Oakville's most coveted terroir, bordered by names that define the California fine wine universe:

Neighbour Market Price
Harlan Estate · a stone's throw away ~$2,000+
Promontory (Harlan) · originally part of VHR ~$1,300+
★ Tor Vine Hill Ranch 2021 $224.99

Over the years, parts of the original Vine Hill Ranch property were split off — eventually becoming Promontory (now a Harlan property) and Andy Beckstoffer's Missouri Hopper, one of the six legendary Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyards. The heart of Vine Hill Ranch — the parcels around the foreman's house and family home — stayed intact, and it is from these original vines that Tor Kenward makes his wine.

The Vintage

2021: The Greatest Vintage of All Time
for Napa Valley

"2021 in Napa Valley will be remembered as one of the great modern vintages — exceptional concentration, remarkable natural acidity, and a structural precision that only the finest years produce."

— Wine Spectator, Napa Valley 2021 Vintage Report

"Possibly the best wine produced here since the terrific 2001 or 1991."

— JC, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate · 98+ Points

"The 2021 Togni is one of the wines of the year. A soaring, exotic bouquet makes a strong opening statement. Mind-blowing purity and exceptional finesse."

— Antonio Galloni, Vinous · 99 Points · #1 Wine of the Year 2024

The Winemaker

Tor Kenward.
Beringer's Former VP.
Jeff Ames, Winemaker.

Tor Kenward spent 27 years as VP of Beringer Vineyards before founding TOR Wines in 2001 — built on the premise that the greatest wines come from single-vineyard, single-site expressions of Napa's finest terroir. Winemaker Jeff Ames crafts the Vine Hill Ranch bottling with a micro-production philosophy: only nine barrels of this wine were made in 2021. When Wine Spectator called Vine Hill Ranch "one of Napa Cabernet's best-kept secrets," they were not exaggerating.

The Phillips family — who have farmed this land since 1957 — famously turned down a nine-figure offer from a corporate buyer, choosing instead to keep the property in the family and let the vineyard's legacy grow organically through the producers they trust. That is the kind of vineyard this is.

The Critical Consensus · Seven Voices

Owen Bargreen · 99 Points

"The 2021 'Vine Hill Ranch' by TOR comes from this famed spot in the Oakville AVA, as this site neighbors the wooded hills of the Mayacama Mountain Range. This bottling comes from blocks 4, 7, and 3 and was stored in 80% new French oak prior to bottling. Exotic spices mark the nose alongside crème de violette, mocha, tar and black licorice. The palate is seamless and beautifully concentrated, with its stony soil character, as every working piece moves in seamless unison. A total stunner from this enticing vintage, savor this beauty now and over the next twenty-five years — or potentially more."

The Wine Independent · Lisa Perrotti-Brown · 98+ Points

"Possibly the best wine produced here since the terrific 2001 or 1991. Quite deep garnet-purple. Scents of blackcurrant cordial, warm blackberries, and boysenberry compote with hints of Indian spices, molten chocolate, unsmoked cigars, and lilacs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with a densely woven tapestry of muscular black fruits and bold, earthy layers, framed by exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and electric freshness, finishing with incredible length and depth."

James Suckling · 98 Points

"So impressive with incredible depth and layers of dark berry, cassis and plum with hints of grilled meat, new leather and violets. Full-bodied with rock-solid tannins that are amazingly polished and fine. Endless finish. One of the greatest VHR Cabs ever made."

Jeb Dunnuck · 97 Points

"A rocking wine. Incredible depth, silky tannins, beautiful minerality, and a finish that won't quit. It has that rare combination of power and finesse that only the greatest Oakville sites can deliver."

Vinous · Antonio Galloni · 97 Points

"Simply enchanting. The purity and depth of fruit are striking. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather and violets all meld together in a wine of extraordinary beauty and finesse. The 2021 is one of the most complete VHR wines I have ever tasted."

Wine Advocate · 97 Points

"Incredible. Deep and layered with a stunning concentration of dark fruit, floral lift, and impeccable structure. The tannins are remarkably polished and the finish extends for over a minute. A tour de force from this legendary Oakville site."
