Visit any wine auction, ask any critic or fortunate wine lover, and you'll understand why Dunn is considered a "First Growth of the Napa Valley." Not surprisingly, Randy Dunn's blue-chip Cabernet Sauvignons are difficult to find outside of the winery's mailing list.
Randy Dunn is one of the world's most celebrated makers of extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons.
Dunn established his reputation at Caymus Winery from 1975 to 1985, where his Cabernet Sauvignons became the benchmark for the industry. In addition, his artistry shaped other premium wineries that now enjoy an acclaimed place in the sun (Pahlmeyer, Livingston, La Jota and others). Since 1979, Dunn has produced roughly 5,000 cases a year of his Dunn Vineyards Cabernets.
From Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2022:
These remain stubbornly backward, classic renderings of Napa Cabernet, always reined in—sometimes through the use of technology—and always age-worthy, starting to really show their true value after a decade (sometimes more) of aging. I still have the 1996s, bought to commemorate our oldest son's birth year, hidden away in my cellar, with no worries about how they're developing.

2018 Dunn Vineyards
Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
97 Points - Vinous:
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is elegant, deep and classy. Inky dark purplish fruit, savory herbs, menthol, licorice and spice. The purity of the fruit is remarkable today. There is plenty of youthful Howell Mountain tannin, so readers will have to be patient. Bright floral accents lift the red/purplish berry fruit nicely. This is such an expressive, alluring Cabernet. (Drink between 2028-2043)" - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2022)
96 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Ripe and very juicy, with a youthfully compact set of plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors wrapped in licorice and violet notes. This is both racy and grippy, showing serious power but with the freshness and drive to match. Delivers a long, iron accent that scores the fruit through the finish. Best from 2024 through 2040. 3,523 cases made." -JM (6/30/22)
95+ Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a typically long-term proposition, coated in dusty tannins and cedary oak. It will take time for the cassis, blueberry and slightly pine-scented backbone of this wine to emerge, as for the moment it's almost difficult to taste. Yes, the concentration is present, the tannins are almost silky-ripe, but the structure of this medium to full-bodied wine is unassailable. Hands off for at least five years, and probably more, to judge by how past vintages have evolved. Drink 2030 - 2050." - Joe Czerwinski (5/31/22)

2017 Dunn Vineyards
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
94 Points - Vinous:
"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a total knock-out. What a wine. In some recent vintages, the Napa Valley Cabernet has been a bit light, but in 2017 it boasts tremendous richness, power and depth. Plush dark fruit, gravel, dried herbs and spice all flesh out in a decidedly intense, kicked up Napa Cabernet. Give it a few years for the baby fat to melt away. This is such an impressive wine." - Antonio Galloni (1/2021)
93+ Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon starts off dry and cedary, but it adds notes of thyme, sage and cassis with air. It's a solid effort, maybe not quite as brilliant as the 2018, but definitely worthy of attention. It's medium to full-bodied, streamlined and tannic, with a long, dusty finish." -Joe Czerwinski (5/22)

2018 Dunn Vineyards
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
94 Points - Robert Parker's WA:
"Dunn's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon shows terrific purity and focus in its aromas of cassis and pencil shavings and on the medium to full-bodied palate, where it's streamlined and smooth. There's intensity and concentration, but they sort of slide past almost unnoticed, lubricated by fine-grained tannins and lingering notes of cassis and graphite on the finish." - Joe Czerwinski (May 2022)
94 Points - Vinous:
"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a gorgeous wine, especially for Dunn fans who want a wine to drink that won't take forever to come around. Dark and savory, with terrific depth, the 2018 is full of character. Black cherry, lavender, chocolate, sage, mint and cloves all open in the glass. The 2018 has just enough grip to have a good amount of classic structure, but not to the point of being forbidding. The Napa Cabernet is 55% Howell Mountain and 45% Coombsville fruit. The 2018 is beautifully done and an absolute delight." - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2022)
93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Well-endowed, with waves of lightly warmed plum sauce, blackberry preserves and melted black licorice framed by a roasted apple wood note. Flashes of sassafras and sweet bay leaf add alluring range through the muscular finish. Best from 2023 through 2035. 1,814 cases made." - JM (Jun 2022
