A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
Arriving Tuesday, October 27: Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018, dressed in Damien Hirst’s limited-edition label. James Suckling gave it 99; Vinous and Falstaff 98; Wine Spectator 96.
Explosive, Weightless, Silk-Textured
Antonio Galloni at Vinous: “explosive, bright and so vibrant in the glass… Readers will find a Dom Pérignon of unreal precision and class.” James Suckling, at 99: “Weightless and refined for the vintage.”
Wine Spectator finds “the raw silk–textured mousse,” and Jancis Robinson’s team sums it up: “Really very glamorous indeed. A no-brainer for hedonists.”
Why 2018 Drinks So Beautifully Now
2018 was a dream year in Champagne: the hottest summer on the region’s record and the earliest harvest since records began in 1822. The Comité Champagne described grapes in “perfect health status” with “an aromatic richness and sugar well above average.”
Decanter called it “truly exceptional for Champagne,” a vintage “remembered for producing both quality and quantity.” And where 2008 and 2012 are built for the long haul, the 2018s show what Decanter calls “a charming, forward nature.”
At Dom Pérignon, in Vincent Chaperon’s first vintage as Chef de Cave, “both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reached record ripeness.” The result is sun-soaked, luscious, bombastic hedonism: a great Dom Pérignon you do not have to wait for.
The Artist’s Label
Hirst drew on his 2001 Kaleidoscope paintings, whose concentric patterns are made of butterfly wings, and turned them into a pattern of miniature Dom Pérignon shields; he says the shield’s symmetry reminded him of a butterfly. The 2018 wears deep blue, a colour the collaboration ties to infinity and spirituality.
Dom Pérignon has dressed its vintages in artists’ labels since Karl Lagerfeld in 2005. Inside is 54% Chardonnay and 46% Pinot Noir.
And Three More Doms
We also have the last 2 bottles of the double 100-point P2 2008, “one of the greatest DPs ever made” in James Suckling’s words, and the 2012 and 2015 vintages.

Very floral aromas with jasmine, honeysuckle, lemons and subtle apples. Lavender as well. The medium-bodied palate has super-integrated bubbles, a touch of fine phenolics and a racy, lively finish. Weightless and refined for the vintage. The aftertaste includes ginger, dried apples, lychees, bitter lemons and minerals. 54% chardonnay and 46% pinot noir. Dosage 4.5 g/L.
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
98 Points
The 2018 Dom Pérignon is explosive, bright and so vibrant in the glass. Medium in body, with layers of understated depth, the 2018 dazzles from start to finish. Lemon peel, chalk, mint and white pepper all open with a bit of coaxing. Readers will find a Dom Pérignon of unreal precision and class. (Drink between 2028-2058) Antonio Galloni, May 2026

Fine bubbles. An elegant, refined bouquet—delicate, cool, smoky, with notes of freshly cut lime, delicate brioche, mandarin zest, yellow apple, and a hint of hazelnut in the background. A refined sparkling wine. Good body, juicy, with a delicate yet firm acidity, delicate white fruit, grapefruit zest, vineyard peach, and a hint of sea salt on the finish; long. Sep 2026

96 Points
There’s a sense of finesse to this understated Champagne, which leads with minerally smoke and chalk accents on the nose before flavors of black cherry, lemon pâte de fruit, brioche, grilled nuts and pickled ginger come to the fore. Structured yet graceful, this expands beautifully on the raw silk-textured mousse, with the profile unfurling through the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2045.
Jancis Robinson

Smoky, tense and taut with more marked acidity and depth than the 2017. But then the ripeness really shines through, too, though there’s a touch of something saline or mineral. This should last well. Great fruit intensity. Really very glamorous indeed. A no-brainer for hedonists. Jun 2025
