A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
The winery just released our allocation of The Mascot 2022, and it arrives from their cellar on Wednesday, September 30th. It is 36 bottles and 3 magnums, and this offer will sell them out long before they land.
The 99-Point Wine You Cannot Get
Decanter gave the 2022 Harlan Estate 99 points. Jonathan Cristaldi calls it “seamless, compelling, and utterly complete.” It averages $2,000 a bottle, and Harlan sells through a mailing list with a wait measured in years.
Most of It, in The Mascot
You cannot get the Harlan. You can get most of what makes it special in The Mascot, which comes from the same family and the younger vines of its three estates: Harlan Estate, BOND and Promontory.
It began as a family wine poured at the Harlan table. The 2008 vintage was the first with enough to share, 500 cases, and the first bottles were released in 2013. The winery calls it “a youthful snapshot of their future.”
What I Tasted Last Week
I tasted the 2022 last week. It is lavishly luscious, creamy and velvety, and still fresh and vibrant. It is a perfect sequel to the 2021.
The winery credits two moments. A rare, heavy rainstorm in October 2021 let the vines deepen their roots, and an early harvest that began in mid-August was in the cellar before a record September heat spell.

Decanter
99 Points
There’s an incredible freshness and tension, and compared to 2021, despite the earlier harvest, the clarity, generosity, and crunch of the bright fruit stand out… Seamless, compelling, and utterly complete. — Jonathan Cristaldi, February 2025

The Winery, On The 2022
Earnestly inviting, dark-fruit aromatics are enlivened by lively, impressionistic brushstrokes of spice. The generous entry billows on the mid-palate, accentuating the wine’s textural softness and warmth. This unfolding, almost opulent at first, is woven back into shape and form through the interplay of tannin and acidity, tapering easily into a pure, savory finish.

The Artisan Guarantee
Winery cellar to our cellar. Nothing in between.
We do not buy from the grey market and we do not buy at auction. Our allocation ships directly from the winery to Mountain View and is handled once. With a wine this collected, provenance is most of what you are paying for.
The Bottom Line
36 bottles and 3 magnums, and then the 2022 is gone.
The 2022 Harlan Estate scored 99 and averages $2,000. The Mascot comes from the younger vines of the same estates for $195, and to me it is a perfect sequel to the 2021.
When we offered the 2021, the allocation was committed in under an hour and we finished with a waiting list. This allocation arrives on September 30th, and it will be spoken for long before then.
Cheers,
— James Tran
