Notes from the Winemaker:
Steep and incredibly impressive this is a vineyard site to keep your eye on. Clearly an easy vineyard to make a monster Pinot Noir from, we think the magic is in these shallow soils and the opportunity to make something ethereal while remaining richly textured an undeniably California in style. Multiple sections, clones and rootstocks are all harvested and fermented individually, some utilizing more stems than others in an effort to buttress the intensely fruity quality of this exceptional site.
Pretty much the polar opposite of the Sun Chase Vineyard wine. Dark and opaque, black fruit, dark spice and rich, ripe and robust Pinot flavors. Fresh flowers, tangerine-peel, cardamom and Santa Rosa Plum give this fresh, lively Pinot Noir lift, definition and vibrancy.
80% Whole-Cluster, crushed by foot, natural fermentations, never racked, 18 months in all old multiple use French Oak barrels. Bottled without any clarification.

Ratings & Reviews
"The 2012 Pinot Noir Gaps Crown is one of the darker, more powerful Pinots I have tasted from Wind Gap. Violets, lavender, black cherries, menthol and licorice flesh out in an ample, structured Pinot full of personality. With time in the glass the wine blossoms beautifully, pretty much totally covering the whole clusters completely." (Jan 2015)
92 Points - Stephen Tanzer (2011 Vintage):
"(made with 50% whole clusters; 75% of the wine was raised in concrete eggs and the rest in neutral French oak; 12.8% alcohol and 3.37 pH): Bright ruby-red. Vibrant black raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by Asian spices and candied flowers. Offers sweet dark berry and bitter cherry flavors enlivened by white pepper and allspice. The long, supple finish features fine-grained tannins and a late candied lavender kick." - Stephen Tanzer (May 2013)
92 Points - Antonio Galloni (2011 Vintage):
"A bit of a stylistic departure, the 2011 Pinot Noir Gaps Crown Vineyard comes across as rich, deep and sensual next to the rest of the range. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice all flesh out in an expressive, generous Pinot Noir that captures the very best qualities of the year. In 2011, 75% of the wine was aged in concrete eggs, an unusual approach with Pinot that yielded stark, naked expression of fruit that is remarkable for its purity. The 50% whole clusters are nicely integrated throughout. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019." - Antonio Galloni (Apr 2013)
Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Dense and complex, well-built around a core of plum and cherry, this shows a loamy earth and dried herb edge, firming on the finish. Drink now through 2020. 138 cases made." - JL (Jul 31, 2013)
