Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. Alfredo Currado married Luciana Vietti and is largely responsible for the resurrection of the Arneis grape. Today the estate is led by Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena.

In 2016 the historic winery was acquired by Krause Holdings, enabling Luca and Elena Currado, the fourth generation in charge of the Vietti brand, to add a number of prized crus to the estate’s holdings, all while maintaining the family approach for which the cellar has always been known.

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine are grown in the steep terraced single vineyard site Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto. The grapevines were planted in 1989. The vineyards soil is made of marl (clay in combination with limestone).

The grapes were, afret a short period of cold-maceration, fermented in open stainless-steel tanks for about two weeks at a temeperature of 26-28°C. During the alcoholic fermentation frequently remontage and délestages were implemented to achieve a perfect extraction of color and tannins.

Aging: 18 months between big oak barrels, barriques and steel tanks.

Tasting Notes

Deer purple color. Pronounced and intense aromas of ripe red and black cherries, paired with notes of spices. Medium to full bodied, with intense fruit on the palate that is paired with refreshing acidity. The single vineyard Scarrone has finesse, excellent balance, great complexity and a long lingering finish.

Food Pairings:
Hearty stews, seasoned pasta and poultry with rich sauces, game, roasted red meats and sharp cheese.

"The Vietti 2017 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone is defined by a spot of sweetness backed by generous layers of dried blackberry, plum and black cherry. This vintage offers a generous level of intensity that is soft and almost succulent in character. There is so much primary fruit in this wine, but the complexity and the varietal character of the grape remain beautifully intact nonetheless.
