The domaine is situated at an altitude of 150 meters above sea-level - a high point on this coastal appellation where maritime breezes cool the arid climate. Fourteen hectares of red earth, clay, sand, and gravel rest upon sturdy limestone bedrock. Brow-beating excavation and focused determination alone have built these vineyards. Agnes still has early photographs of the Mauric family, who lived here before the Hocquards, working the soil. Knee-deep into the red earth, behind heavy plows, vineyard workers toiled to bring this land to its current glory. (The tradition continues even today.) The copious rock served as sturdy material for building the house and walls that surround the property. The limestone has most importantly left its trace in the wines, instilling them with tremendous complexity, long length, and fresh elegance that makes them ideal for cellar-aging.

St. Ferreol:

This cuvee was born in 1987 of the desire to single out the estate's best Mourvedres, without diminishing the estate's reds. Saint Ferreol is only produced when the Classic wine itself is beautifully balanced. Saint Ferreol of the rather witty name, and sometimes impenetrable depths, pays homage to this grape variety, which is at once omnipresent (90% in this wine) and so difficult to define, and to our plot of land, made up of so many different soil types. Reserved, strict and upright, its spicy, peppery palate leaves a mineral taste reminiscent of our sandstones. Tobacco, truffles and lilies combine with Carignan's acidity, which opens up the wine and brings out the brilliance in its shadowy depths.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A rich, suave and spicy red, with minty accents to the vibrantly pure flavors of dark currant, plum, sage and mocha. The precise finish powers ahead, with unctuous notes of roasted meat and dark chocolate. Drink now through 2020. 25 cases imported" - KM (Oct 15, 2012)
