The winery focuses on small-production, single-vineyard wines from esteemed Napa Valley sites, working with top growers to source fruit. Known for producing high-scoring, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons and other wines, the winery reflects Tor Kenward's extensive experience and deep relationships in the region.

Winemaking:
The 2022 Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet spent a little less time on the skins (21 days) in 2022 compared to the previous vintage in 2021, as the extraction of both tannin and fruit was faster than normal. This wine is a combination of Cabernet co-fermented from blocks 4 and 7, and a few barrels from the co-fermentation of block 3 Cabernet and Petit Verdot. As usual, both lots that make up this wine were aged in Taransaud barrels, most of which are 113M+, with a few 112H. Their Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard is a special part of Tor’s 50-year history in the Napa Valley. He knew its early stewards, Bob and Alex Phillips, who moved to their family’s Oakville vineyard in 1978. Over time, they cultivated it into the world-renowned site it is today – best suited for Cabernet Sauvignon. We now work with their son, Bruce Phillips, where we have three blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon. We are hard-pressed to think of a vintage where Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard did not contribute to our Black or Pure Magic bottling. The Phillips family’s love and dedication to the land is inspirational.

Ratings & Reviews

99 Points - Owen Bargreen:
The 2021 ‘Vine Hill Ranch’ by TOR comes from this famed spot in the Oakville AVA, as this site neighbors the wooded hills of the Mayacama Mountain Range. This bottling comes from blocks 4, 7, and 3 and was stored in 80% new French oak prior to bottling. Exotic spices mark the nose alongside creme de violette, mocha, tar and black licorice. The palate is seamless and beautifully concentrated, with its stony soil character, as every working piece moves in seamless unison. A total stunner from this enticing vintage, savor this beauty now and over the next twenty five years — or potentially more.

98+ Points - The Wine Independent:
"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2021 Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is quite shut down to start, needing a lot of shaking to bring out notes of crushed red and blackcurrants, fresh blackberries, and mulberries, leading to hints of pencil shavings, iron ore, and forest floor. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house with a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the intense black and red berry flavors, finishing very long and earthy. Love it!" - LPB (Jan 2025)

98 Points - James Suckling:
"Extremely aromatic with violets, blue berries and black currants. Then notes of graphite and lead pencil come through. Amazing aromas. Full-bodied with rich and dusty tannins that show fantastic length and intensity. Bark and wet earth undertones with black mushrooms. Needs three or four years to come around. Best after 2026." (Nov 2023)

97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"From an incredible vineyard in the southern part of Oakville, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard is about as silky and seamless as they come, with full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black fruits, savory herbs, chocolate, and spicy wood. Coming from Blocks 3, 4, and 7, it has polished tannins, flawless overall balance, and a layered, majestic style that will keep for 20-25 years, although it's going to be impossible to resist with just 3-4 years of bottle age. Dark and brooding, with tons of intensity, the 2021 is all class. In this edition, the TOR wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon blended from Blocks 3, 4 and 6, making it one of the very few wines from this site (aside from the VHR wine) that is made from several blocks. That practice allows for a high degree of fine-tuning, which very much comes through in this wine. I especially admire the energy here. This is the first vintage of TOR Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet that does not include a touch of Petit Verdot. Even so, it is incredibly special. Dark fruit, lavender, espresso, mocha, leather and dried herbs linger. Medium to full-bodied, it doesn't have the sheer power of some of the other Tor bottlings but makes up for it in complexity. Silky, streamlined on the palate and boasting tremendous length on the finish, it's another winner from Tor Kenward and winemaker Jeff Ames." - Joe Czerwinski (Jul 2024)

96 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted entirely from grapes sourced from three blocks in the iconic Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard in the southernmost reaches of Oakville. Each block was fermented separately, blended, and aged 18 months in French oak. An incredibly savoury nose sports ripe red berry fruit aromas laced with green tobacco and nuanced by sandalwood and mocha spices. Its medium-bodied palate has wonderful black currant notes, cooling acidity, crushed rock minerality, and textured, granular tannins with terrific grip. It's a long and lean red with an extended finish." - Jonathana Cristaldi (Mar 2024)

https://artisan.wine/products/tor-vine-hill-ranch-cabernet-sauvignon-2022-oakville-napa-valley-california-jd-97-js-97-dm-95
