About the Winery:
When producing world-class Pinot Noir, location is everything. For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara’s Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard.
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay come exclusively from the estate vineyard and are biodynamically farmed.
About this Wine:
Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the Pinot Noir for this méthode champenoise sparkling wine comes from specific blocks on our estate vineyard, which are picked early – before our regular pinot noir harvest begins. The estate Pinot Noir grapes were gently pressed, then transferred to stainless tanks to begin a long, cool fermentation, which was completed in once-used and neutral French oak barrels. Following six months of sur lie aging in barrel, the wine was bottle aged an additional 16 months en tirage prior to preserve its finesse and add to the wine’s complexity. Sea Spray is fresh and alive on the palate and finishes with impressive length.
Tasting Notes:
The nuanced nose expresses fresh blueberries, rising dough and rose petal. The wine enters the palate with energetic freshness and is enlivened with minerality on the finish.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Decanter Magazine:"The 2018 Sea Smoke Sea Spray sparkling wine offers a rich tapestry of aromas leading with black cherry, wild herbs, liquorice, and brioche. Incredibly creamy and zesty mousse, with gorgeous purity of fruits, redolent of cherry, green apple, pear, nougat, and crushed almonds with a profoundly deep vein of river stone minerality. The finish is epic, fresh, and salty. This is a tension-filled, taut, youthful sparkling wine, and it has decades ahead as it develops a deep-riper fruit profile, and some of that acid tension relaxes. A fabulous display from Sta. Rita Hills." (Apr 2023)
