Notes from the Winemaker:
Our flagship Cabernet, this broad, muscular wine displays classic fruit characters of dark berries, currants and briar fruit complemented with delicious notes of violets and sweet spice. Elegant threads of graphite and crushed rock minerality weave through the mass of ripe fruit and provide further dimension and complexity to the wine. Exceptionally rich and concentrated, the 2010 Schrader is a tower of Cabernet power with enormous structure and firm, grippy tannins that amply support the intense fruit core.
Vineyard:
Originally planted by pioneer Hamilton Crabb in 1868, To Kalon – meaning highest beauty in Greek – this noble “first growth†estate in Oakville has established itself as the preeminent source of Napa Valley’s finest grapes. The vineyard is defined by its high mineral content and exceptional drainage, offering north-south sun exposure by day with cool coastal breezes at night which we feel is the ideal environment for growing our Cabernet Sauvignon.
Appellation: Oakville, Napa Valley
Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Composition: Clones 4, 6 and 337
Cooperage: Aged 20 months in rare Darnajou French oak barrels
Winemaker: Thomas Brown
"One of the flagships, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Schrader Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is endowed with serious minerality and tension. Violets, pencil shavings, blackberries and cinnamon burst from this deep, resonant, implosive Cabernet. I very much like the intensity and power here. This is another huge, towering wine that will require considerable patience, but it is dazzling, even today. The Schrader is mostly clone 4 from block C2, with a dollop of clone 6 from D2 and 337 from B2." - Antonio Galloni" (Feb 2012)
96 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Delivers a rich, potent mix of layered flavors that are deep and pure, brimming with black licorice, dark berry, mocha, tea and floral notes that are tight, focused and persistent, with gutsy tannins. Drink now through 2030. 52 cases made." - JL (Jun 15, 2013)
94+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is the most tannic of these cuvees. It exhibits an opaque purple color along with a big, intense perfume, but the wine is closed, structured, muscular and masculine in the mouth. There are only 52 cases, compared to 370 cases in 2012, so good luck finding any. This offering was made from clone 4, 6 and 337, making it one of the few multiple clone wines in the Schrader portfolio. Give this 2010 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25-30 years." - Robert M. Parker, Jr. (30th Oct 2013)
