About the Winery:
Located in a converted warehouse in the heart of Santa Barbara’s industrial zone, Sanguis uses grapes from the Central Coast's Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valleys to produce wines that are composed of any combination of a dozen or so grape varieties ignoring traditional rules by crossing the lines between Rhone, Burgundy, and Bordeaux varietals.
About this Wine:
Founded by Mattias Pippig in 2004, Optimist offers early pleasure, with a sunny smile and friendly wink (rather than that smart-ass, devil-may-care smirk).
Optimist is a woman (maybe Helen Mirren) who exudes confident style, pulls you in with infectious excitement and then holds you with the luscious textural depth that brings together athletic firmness and a gentle touch – a nature she owes to being this wild amalgam of Syrah, Petit Sirah, Grenache, Roussanne, and Cabernet Sauvignon, whole cluster fermented on native yeasts and raised in an array of new and seasoned French oak vessels for about 2 years.
Ratings & Reviews
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2017 Optimist is a blend of 55% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 15% Petite Sirah and splashes of Roussanne and Viognier. It has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and a nose of dried plums, toasted coconut, pencil shavings, candied peaches and wet leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate is savory and earthy in character with a firm frame and bright pops of freshness on the long finish. 350 cases produced." - Erin Brooks (Oct 2020)
93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2017 Optimist is a kitchen sink blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petit Sirah, Roussanne, Viognier, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deeper ruby/plum color is followed by a great nose of ripe blackberry and currant fruits, toasted bread, roasted herbs, chocolate, and ground pepper. With full-bodied richness, a rounded, elegant texture, and ripe tannins, it's a terrific value in the lineup." (8/4/20)
92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2017 Optimist is a terrific introduction to the Sanguis reds. Sweet cherry and plum fruit open up first, followed by hints of cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and flowers that add nuance. Medium in body yet rich, as all these wines are, the Optimist has plenty to offer. The immediate, open-knit style is so appealing. The 2017 spent 25 months in barrel." - Antonio Galloni (Aug 2020)
