About the Winery:
RAEN Winery was founded in 2013 by Carlo & Dante Mondavi, the two sons of Tim Mondavi. After working with their father in building Continuum, they decided to go off on their own and venture out to the West Sonoma Coast to make cool climate Pinot Noir that can stand on its own on the world stage.

About the Vineyard:
Our 4.8 Sea Field Vineyard (monopole) produces our most elegant wines year in and year out. This unique bottling comes from an ancient Sea Field of diverse marine soils and fractured bedrock dating back between 66 and 200 million years. Soaring 1,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean and less than 3 miles from its waters, Sea Field is both our most coastal and highest elevation pinot noir site. The combination of these elements creates Sea Field.

About the Wine:

Delicate, lifted aromas of rose petals, orange pith, crushed pomegranate and raspberries, with the essence of where-the-forest-meets-the-ocean fill the bowl. Wild strawberries, cool-coastal forest, wet rock, sea moss and blood orange linger. On the palate, wild strawberries, faint violet flowers and distant notes of white tea lead to a seemingly endless finish.

Ratings & Reviews:

99 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sea Field is a transparent jeweled ruby color and takes things up a notch with its superb aromatics of ripe cherry, gravelly earth, and fresh rose petal. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannins and notes of ripe black raspberry and fresh herbs, it maintains a light sunny touch to its slightly darker profile. Drink 2025-20240.

Carlo and Dante Mondavi founded RAEN in the West Sonoma Coast AVA with the goal of seeking California Grand Cru-equivalent sites in the Freestone-Occidental area, and this year saw the promotion of Melanie McIntre from associate winemaker to winemaker. Less than two miles from the ocean, their wines are vibrant expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the vineyard, they practice no-till farming. The 2021 vintage introduces the first vintage of the Chardonnay Lady Marjorie, an homage to their grandmother and intended to be the counterpoint to the Royal St. Robert tribute of Pinot Noir. Seafield is a roughly 4-acre vineyard and is the rockiest site, with an eastern exposure at 1500 feet of elevation. Bodega is surrounded by redwood forest and is the smallest vineyard at just under two acres. Though the Chardonnays are certainly high quality, the Pinot Noirs capture another level of personality and energy that I find quite compelling.

98 Points - James Suckling:
Extremely aromatic with plums, crushed strawberries, rose flower, powdery dirt, before turning to cherries. Hints of flower stems. Perfumed. Full-bodied and very, very firm. Rather steely. Tight at the end. It opens beautifully in an hour or so. Drink after 2025.

95 Points - Wine Spectator:
Shows mulled blood orange, strawberry and raspberry fruit, which meld nicely with a vibrant savory edge, along with hints of red tea and incense. The finish is underscored by crushed sea shell hints, which add nice lingering tension.

95 Points - Vinous:
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sea Field is intensely floral and full of flavor, with cool-climate savoriness driving a core of bright, red-toned fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the 2021 has a ton of complexity waiting to emerge. Time in the glass brings out compelling inner perfume and quite a bit of nuance. But, it is tightly wound and quite reticent at this stage.
