About the winery:
Fattoria Poggio di Sotto was founded in 1989 on the Southeast side of Montalcino, just outside of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. A winery dedicated to perfection, Poggio di Sotto is planted with a single variety (Sangiovese Grosso) on the choicest soils to produce extraordinary wines in Montalcino. The estate changed ownership in 2011 when the original founder Piero Palmucci sold to Claudio Tipa, owner of the famed Grattamacco estate in Bolgheri and Castello di ColleMassari. Poggio di Sotto only makes 45,000 bottles a year of Rosso, Brunello and Riserva.  Here is some excellent background info from Jeb Dunnuck's new reviewer Audrey Frick:

"The estate has been under the management of Colle Massari Wine Estates, led by winemaker Luca Marrone, since 2011. Farming and viticulture are entirely organic across the Colle Massari Wine Estates, which include Gratamacco, and as of the 2016 vintage, San Giorgio, also in Montalcino. Luca continues to maintain and uphold the philosophy of their late consultant Giulio Gambelli, who famously championed classic expressions of Sangiovese with translucency and high complexity. Only large 70hl Slavonian oak casks are utilized for slow fermentations as well as aging, without temperature control, and long maceration times for slow and low extraction."

About the Wine:
This Rosso, the little brother of the Brunello, very confidently entices and seduces from the first to the last sip. Pure elegance with Burgundian finesse. Notes of black cherry, cedar wood and bitter cherry dominate. The tannins are fine and dry and adorn the fruit like a silk cloth. Has great freshness but also a pleasant pressure in the after-taste, with notes of dark chocolate and blackberries.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Supple yet intense, featuring macerated cherry, strawberry, rose and mineral aromas and flavors. Shows a saline element that expands as this lingers. Stays fresh and firm, yet balanced. Drink now through 2023. 900 cases made." -BS (Oct 2018)

90 Points - James Suckling:
"A little lean but some pleasing berry and tile character. Medium body, lovely fruit and a juicy finish. Delicious. Drink now. (Sep 2017)
