Notes from The Winemaker:

THE PHILOSOPHY…
Podere Sapaio has an experimental and innovational philosophy: it aims at searching new expressions of Bordeaux grape varieties in the Bolgheri area, with the final goal of producing wines which put together power, elegance and longevity.

A NEW INTERPRETER OF THE BOLGHERI AREA…
The estate Podere Sapaio was founded in 1999. Its 40 hectars are spread between the Councils of Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona. Grape varieties of Bordeaux origin -Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot-, which in the last fifty years have imposed themselves in the area, are grown in lands of quaternary deposits. Other grape varieties are present in small quantities. There are also some hectares of land, which are part of the estate, where Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino cultivars of olive trees are grown.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - James Suckling:
“Lovely lavender and mineral character to this red with medium body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Extremely refined. Sage undertones to it as well. Drink or hold.” (Jul 20, 2016)

93 Points - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:
“The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Sapaio is a rich and penetrating wine with a long sense of silky persistence. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc aged in oak for 18 months. Some 20,000 bottles are produced. Initially, the wine feels crisp and delineated. Make no mistake, the power and the brawn creep up on you slowly with firm tannins and black fruit intensity at the back.” Monica Larner (Oct 28, 2016)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
“This is elegant and vibrant, boasting black currant, blackberry, violet, licorice and spice flavors. Balanced, with firm grip and a fresh finish that echoes fruit and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2019 through 2030. 1,250 cases made.” –BS (Jul 31. 2017)
