About the Winery:
Planeta’s journey began at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Here, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Planeta today encompasses six distinct wine estates in five regions across Sicily; Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Sciara Nuova on Etna at Castiglione di Sicilia, and the newest addition, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. Each vineyard site is carefully cultivated with grapes that best compliment the local terroir.

About the Wine:
In February 1985 we planted 4 hectares of Chardonnay and suddenly we went back a century: it was the time of the viticulture of the Orleans – royal exiles of France – and of the Princes of Valdina; of Baron Mendola, a fine ampelographer, and of the equally visionary Baron Spitaleri, who, with these noble varieties from beyond the Alps grown in their island lands, had enlivened great lunches of many European courts.
It was not an easy planting, a hot summer like never before, plants produced for other climates, calcareous clayey soils, difficult to tame but equally generous in quality. To make a long story short, many vines disappeared to be replanted, regrafted, reset with the stubbornness of those who strongly believe in a different future.
Never has so much effort been better rewarded: in 1989 the great Carlo Corino arrived, oenologist-gentleman, Piedmontese by birth and culture, Australian in the work for decades, the wizard of chardonnay of temperate climates.
Those 4 hectares excite him as much as the sun and the human warmth he feels in Sicily. We work together and build a myth that from the first harvest in 1994 to today fills us with joy and great satisfaction. Time passes and we are in July 2014: 30 years have passed, walking in the glorious vineyard an expert eye clearly distinguishes the vines that took root in 1985... "Eureka"!

Our agronomists tour the entire vineyard and mark the plants identified, at the right time the best bunches are chosen, transported, crushed and poured into barriques.
One more year of anxious anticipation and in the end Didacus was born, resting in the bottle for the right time and now... it's here for you.
Why Didacus?
My great father, Vito, used to call me in different ways.
Diego was normal, Dieguzzo was for moments of great confidence, Didacus, and as a child I naively thought of Luciferus, it was for moments of my not infrequent intemperance.
The fifth of seven children, a large house... But that's another story I'll tell you one day.
Thank you for paying attention to us, and even more thanks to everyone who worked for this wine.

-Diego Planeta

Tasting Notes:

A pure expression of Chardonnay executed in a beautifully Burgundian style, complete with a sunny Sicilian twist. The wine shows precision and focus, yet it offers a generous array of stone fruit and floral aromas along the way. As the wine takes on more weight in the glass, it begins to reveal rounder and more opulent tones of Sicilian almond, candied fruit, orange peel, anise seed, and salty mineral tones that recall the soft sea breezes that wash gently over Menfi in the southern part of the island.

Ratings & Reviews:

96 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2019 Chardonnay Didacus is a pretty golden color. An exotic mix of crushed yellow apples and hints of peach is complemented by almond extract, vanilla custard and sweet smoke. This is seamlessly silky and nearly oily in feel, communicating undeniable elegance, with confectionery spices mixing with saline-minerals to create a push and pull of tension, as ripe orchard fruits settle upon the senses. The 2019 finishes impossibly long with a perfectly integrated hint of oak that lingers, which is more of an accent than a distraction, as a bitter trace of hazelnut slowly fades. This classy rendition of Didacus ranks among the top Italian Chardonnays that I’ve ever tasted.” – Eric Guido (Jun 2022)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Buttery, toasty notes join citrus curd on the nose of this wine. It evokes a lemon tart topped by a fluff of meringue and slipped under the salamander to get brûléed before service. Citrus creaminess with cooked pineapple and more butter baked into a crust continues on the palate, buoyed by acid and intensified with heat. – Danielle Callegari (Jul 2023)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"An elegant Chardonnay, with creamy notes of baked pear, almond paste and mandarin orange accented by elderflower and fleur de sel. Finely meshed and just over medium-bodied in weight, with real presence on the palate without being weighty. Lightly mouthwatering acidity carries the rich flavor range on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2029. 583 cases made, 50 cases imported. – AN (Nov 2022)
