Selected from low-yielding estate blocks, it combines concentrated fruit with a firm structure built for the cellar.

Vineyard & Vintage

First planted by Gary Pisoni in 1982, the estate rises to around 1,300 feet. Decomposed granite, schist and quartz underlie 36 planted acres divided into individually farmed blocks. Sustainable farming, coastal fog and demanding terrain shape the wine. A mild 2024 summer gave way to September warmth, followed by a cold spell that interrupted harvest and extended ripening.

Winemaking

The producer's 2024 technical sheet specifies hand harvesting and sorting, native-yeast fermentation with 40% whole clusters, and French oak barrels, 70% new. The wine settles naturally and is bottled without fining or filtration. Jeff Pisoni is the winemaker. Production was 710 cases; alcohol is 14.1%.

Tasting Profile & Food Pairings

Raspberry, dark cherry and plum meet floral, sage and mineral accents. A ripe center and firm tannins lead to a textured, savory finish. Cellar for further development, or decant when young. Suggested pairings include roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom dishes and grilled salmon.

Ratings & Reviews

98 Points – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Palate: “Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2024 Pinot Noir comes barreling out with bold notes of black cherries, mulberries, and wild blueberries, followed by nuances of violets, tar, and bay leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic black fruit layers, framed by velvety tannins and a racy line, finishing long and fragrant. This comes from some of the oldest plantings on the Pisoni property, dating to 1982, as well as from the ridgetops. The soil here is all granite. (Drink between 2026-2040)”

97 Points – Jeb Dunnuck: “A block and barrel selection, the layered, medium-bodied 2024 Pinot Noir focuses on four blocks from the ridges of this famous site with shallower soils and some of the oldest vines, 40% whole-cluster, native-fermented before spending 17 months in 40% new oak. With lower yields, it’s a densely weighted, concentrated wine from high elevation, where both the weather and soils are extreme, granitic, and decomposed. With red berry fruit, cardamom, savory forest, and finely tuned structure to go another decade or more, hold and drink 2028-2040.” – Virginie Boone (Jun 2026)

96 Points – Decanter Magazine: “All from the southernmost estate, first planted by Gary Pisoni in 1982. There is one bottling of this each year; it comes from three or four different blocks out of the dozen planted here. It tends to come from upper-elevation sites, which impart more weight and tannin. Concentrated with red and black fruits, flourishes of florals, and oak fermentation tanks, this wine benefits from concentration and tannin. Violets and salty minerality alight the glass. The palate glistens with great savoury herbals, chicory, and clove. Spiced and elegant, a true classic example of the SLH character.” – Clive Pursehouse (Feb 2026)

94+ Points – Vinous Media: “The 2024 Pinot Noir Pisoni Estate is deep and structured, with potent dark fruit and serious intensity. I first tasted the 2024 a few months back, at which point it was almost painfully tannic. Thankfully, that structure has integrated and resolved to form a fleshier, more generous mouthfeel. It slowly blossoms in the glass to reveal shades of exotic spice, macerated cherry, black sage and subtle sea-spray notes. A mocha-like richness settles in through the finish. The Pisoni Pinot is always on the larger side. Today, the 2024 is also on the monolithic side. Judging by its improvement over the last few months, I would anticipate positive evolution over the coming months and years. (Drink between 2028-2034)” – Billy Norris (May 2026)

Wine Details: Pinot Noir; Pisoni Estate; Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, California; 2024; 750 mL.
