Notes from the Winemaker:
This is our cru of merlot. Wine of great structure on the palate and widly aromatic on the nose. Galatrona is Petrolo’s flagship, the most awarded wine of the estate.

Galatrona is made from only Merlot grapes coming from the estate’s vines of the early 90’s. The yield per plant was notably limited (max 500 g per vine plant) allowing the concentration of all the noble components of the grape fundamental for the great structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

The maceration of the skin lasts more than 14 days. The pumping overs are done with considerable care and very frequently to allow the complete extraction from the skins. The malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, usually starting quickly and with regular development.

After the malolactic fermentation the wine rests in new French oak barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, paying particular attention to its development. This process allows to achieve greater complexity. After bottling, the wine begins its usual refinement period of about 6 months.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This is full of enticing blackberry, blueberry and plum flavors, with a spine of acidity, iron accents and beefy tannins. Long and well-proportioned, this needs time to integrate. Tobacco and spice hints detail the finish. Best from 2022 through 2033. 625 cases made, 75 cases imported." - BS (Issue Mar 31, 2019)
94 Points - Vinous:
"The 2016 Galatrona (Merlot) is fabulous. Powerful, dense and layered, the 2016 brings together serious fruit intensity and energy, as is so typical of this important Tuscan vintage. A whole range of floral and spice notes develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. I have long felt Galatrona is released too early. The 2016 is a perfect example of that. Opening a bottle now is a crime." Antonio Galloni - (Feb 2019)
