About the Winery:
Founded by Sir Peter Michael in 1983 with a singular vision: to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, yet under the California sun and in California soil.
Peter Michael Winery owns three estates: Knights Valley, Seaview (Sonoma Coast), and Oakville (Napa Valley). All rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 500 to nearly 2000 feet and are the only sources for Peter Michael's wines.
Notes from the Winemaker:
L'Esprit des Pavots literally means ˜The Spirit of the Poppies." First produced in the 2001 vintage, the wine was sourced in our Les Pavots vineyard and affectionately referred to as the ˜little brother.â" The blend for L'Esprit has always been more free-form than Les Pavots, varying more from vintage to vintage. Starting in the 2016 vintage we introduced selected lots from our Au Paradis vineyard in Oakville, Napa Valley. The wine is typically more fruit forward and early-drinking than Les Pavots or Au Paradis, but remains a true expression of the Peter Michael style, balanced, elegant and age worthy.

Ratings & Reviews
93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon L'Esprit des Pavots is a blend taken from both Les Pavots in Knights Valley and Au Paradis in Oakville. Bright acids and lifted floral notes give this mid-weight Bordeaux blend energy and a real sense of precision. Red cherry fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and cedar add nuance throughout. Here, too, production is down sharply (1,200 cases versus 1,800, which is more typical), but the wine is just compelling." - Antonio Galloni (Apr 2020)
93 Points - James Suckling:
"Tar and blackberry. Wet earth. Chocolate, too. Full body. Juicy and rich fruit on the finish. Toasty and flavorful. Savory and delicious. A blend from Oakville and the estate in Sonoma. Drinkable now, but better in 2022 and onwards." (Feb 14, 2020)
90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"A blend of 34% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2017 L'Esprit des Pavots comes from 57% Knights Valley AVA and 43% Oakville AVA. Deep garnet-purple, it slips easily out of the glass with forward expressions of warm plums, blackberry pie and mulberries plus hints of fruitcake, Chinese five spice and bay leaves with a touch of unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied, rich and opulent, the palate has a pleasant chewiness with generous black fruit preserves layers and a spicy kick to the finish. 1,195 cases were made." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Feb 2020)
