About the Winery:

Penley Estate is located in the heart of one of Australia’s greatest Cabernet wine regions: Coonawarra. Established in 1988 by the direct descendants of the pioneering Penfold and Tolley winemaking families, Coonawarra’s famed Terra Rossa soils were selected for their ability to produce terroir-driven wines of true regional character. The Estate is now widely regarded as one of the region’s leading producers.

Kate Goodman is one of Australia's best contemporary winemakers. Wineries such as Wirra Wirra McLaren Vale), Tim Kanppstein (Clare Valley), Seppelt (Great Western), Punt Road (Yarra Valley) have all benefited from Kate's brilliance. There is no denial of talent and absolute harmony when it comes to Kate and the winery, where she started in 2016.

Vintage Notes:

The 2019/20 growing season provided challenges throughout, displaying compression of season, extremes of temperature and then a global pandemic at the time of harvest. In spite of this, quality of fruit was excellent and as an initial indicator as to why, the general “pattern” of the season’s weather can be observed as following a normal trend for Coonawarra. Regardless of some variability in bunch numbers and fruit weight, the season overall resulted in good vine balance and the fruit looked fantastic throughout.

Tasting Notes:

The notes shows a complex bouquet of black fruits and varietal herbs. Blood plum, blackcurrant, anise and fresh thyme with a glimpse of purple flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy core of ripe fruit flavors. Integrated French oak notes complement the seamless powdery tannins giving rise to a long a satisfying palate.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
“Elegant, showing appealing, firm earthy notes to the star anise, green cardamom and cigar box spiciness, with a touch of Dutch cocoa powder. Reveals spiced plum, cassis and kirsch flavors that are plump and velvety, with a long finish.” - MW (Jul 2022)

92 Points - James Suckling:
"This is a bright, youthful cabernet with aromas of plums, redcurrants, tobacco and earth. Picked early for freshness. Medium-bodied with little oak impact, a red-plum core and a juicy, drinkable feel.” - NS(Oct 2021)

92 Points - Halliday Wine Companion:
“…Satisfying. The fruit is everything from pepperberries, blackberries, mulberries, some cassis, licorice, aniseed, fennel flower, flat-leaf parsley and bay leaf. In the mouth the wine is decidedly red fruited, straying into the raspberry and pomegranate space. Delicious drinking for the price, and immaculate packaging to boot. Compelling.” - EL (Apr 2022)
