Notes from the Winemaker:
Intense black garnet in color, this wine entices with complex aromas of ripe berries, green olives, graphite, and cracked black pepper. The dense palate offers lavish flavors of black currants, Herbs De Provence, cigar box and baker's cocoa. Chewy tannins lead to a captivating finish with hints of iodine and spice. We recommend decanting this wine in its youth.

Winemaking:

  • Hand harvested at night
  • Hand sorted, cold
  • Fermented with indigenous yeasts in closed-top, stainless steel tanks
  • 6 day cold soak, 31 days total maceration
  • Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrels
  • Aged 20 months in French oak barrels, 100% new
  • Coopers: Taransaud, Darnajou, Marcel Cadet, Radoux, Seguin Moreau
  • Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Unfined and unfiltered; bottled June 2014

"Of the three Beckstoffer Vineyards, it’s pretty much a joyride as to which one readers may prefer. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard (readers may remember the 2002 merited a 100-point score) has a beautiful blueberry and blackberry fruit note, a hint of incense, charcoal, an opaque purple color, full-bodied opulence and again that first-growth quality, richness, complexity and intensity. I’m not sure this is as compelling as the 2002, but it’s not far away. This is a magnificent, multi-dimensional, skyscraper-like Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 15-20 years." - Robert M. Round and seamless on the attack, yet backed up by considerable underlying structure, the 2012 is utterly magnificent and complete. Blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, smoke, spices and menthol are layered into the voluptuous, perfumed finish. The 2012 is going to need time, but it is superb."
