About the Winery:
Orin Swift Cellars was founded by David in 1998: Orin is his father's middle name and Swift is his mother's maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company into a multi-national brand that now includes 300 acres of vineyards in the Southwest of France. This international ambition has led to projects in Spain, Italy, Corsica, Argentina and other locations around the globe. In 2016, Orin Swift (the brand, remaining inventory and the tasting room in St. Helena) was purchased by E. & J. Gallo Winery. Founder Dave Phinney continues to be involved in a consulting role.

Notes from the Winemaker:
The baddest wine of them all, Machete takes no prisoners. It is in your face aromatically, punching your mouth from within. The tannins remind you what it's like to feel, and the ink will put a smile on your face. Our simple goals with machete was to elevate Petite Sirah to the main stage and let it express its own attitude. Robust, dominant and unapologetic, the wine creates its own gravity, pulling all towards it with vintage after vintage resulting in a stellar blend of Petite Sirah, Syah and Grenache.

Black ink that coats the glass and transforms it into an altered state, the 2021 Machete opens with decadent aromas of blue and black fruits, charred meat, a hint of funk and troves of minerality. The entry is more dense than expected with notes of black plum, other stone fruits and essence of game but yet tempered and balanced by candied orange peel and leveled acidity. Typical tannins for this Petite Sirah-based wine, the wine closes with voluptuous texture and intensity.

Blend: Petite Sirah, Syrah, Zinfandel

ABV: 15.4%

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Wine Spectator:
"A burly red, with an attitude that's jammed with bold flavors of blackberry, sandalwood and fruitcake spices as this builds density and tension toward big-shouldered tannins. Petite Sirah and Syrah. Drink now through 2033." - Tim Fish (Oct 2024)

92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"A proprietary red blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Zinfandel aged 14 months in 40% new oak. Rich, meaty with power and intensity, blackberry, Chambord, with long, crisp tannins and chocolatey spices through a very powerful and drying finish. In need of a good decanting as that will release the flood gates of black fruit, herb, and brown spice aromatics and flavours. An opulent and decadent wine imbued with pleasure meant to be enjoyed now almost on its own or with equally rich and hearty dishes." Drink 2024-2028. - Jonathan Cristaldi (Dec 2023)
91 Points - Wine Advocate:

"The 2021 Machete Red Blend is composed of Petite Sirah and Syrah and was matured for 14 months in 40% new oak. Initial aromas of graphite and cedar give way to blueberry liqueur, cassis, violet and iron. The full-bodied palate is ripe and concentrated with candied fruit character. It’s structured by abundant, powdery tannins and rounded acidity and has a long, flavorful finish. 5,800 cases produced." - Erin Brooks (Oct 2024)
