Notes from the Winemaker:
Born in the vineyard “Il Poggio” (5.5 Ha, 310 metres a.s.l.) from which in 1962, it took its name: it is the first Chianti Classico Cru. Made of 90% Sangiovese and from 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino, it ages for 20 months in French oak barrels. Today it represents the most prestigious product of the company, appreciated all over the world. It is produced only in the best vintages. The company has chosen to keep a considerable quantity of bottles of this wine in the cellar being the permanent archives, able to tell the history of Castello di Monsanto.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - James Suckling:
"Very ripe fruit showing the warmth of the growing season of the vintage. Full and round with plenty of fruit and a savory finish. A classic Chianti Classico. Drink now." - (Aug 2016)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A mix of graphite, tea, cherry and raspberry flavors are the highlights of this elegant, firmly structured red. Dense, dusty tannins reign on the finish. On the rustic side, yet with plenty of personality. This gets better with air. Drink now through 2024. 400 cases imported." – BS (Sep 2016)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Aromas of underbrush, dark-skinned berry, espresso menthol and scorched soil lead the nose. On the elegant, structured palate, firm, polished tannins carry dried black cherry, raspberry, cinnamon toast and a touch of anise. Drink 2017–2023.." - Kerin O’Keefe (Jun 2016)

89 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The flagship 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio shows the strain and the overripeness of the vintage. The wine is a little too jammy for my tastes, with heavy blackberry preserves and cooked cherry that take away from the weightlessness and crisp freshness this wine has so effortlessly shown us in the past. The mouthfeel is broad in texture and less dynamic. Riserva Il Poggio is made with 90% Sangiovese, and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino. It is aged in new and neutral tonneaux for 18 months. Given those strong sun-ripened nuances, I would suggest a slightly shorter drinking window as a result." - Monica Larner (Dec 2016)
