Notes from the Winemaker:

Michel Gros worked his first vintage on the family estate alongside his father back in 1975, immediately after graduating from wine school. When his father Jean retired in 1995, the family's large and varied estate was divided between his three children, so today the Gros Dynasty is operated by the family's sixth generation and is divided into four estates known as Domaine Michel Gros, Domaine Gros Frére et Soeur, Domaine A.F. Gros and Domaine Anne Gros.

This name derives from the word "CHAILLE" which means small stones. This "climat" in the southern part of Nuits is planted on an alluvial cone, which indicates a large presence of stones. The soil is clayey, poor in limestone and contains "chailles", a kind of reddish flint, rich in silica. This very special type of soil produces a cuvée which is characterized by an abundant minerality, a very pure fruit expression, a strong acidity and a powerful body, which give it good aging qualities.

Vinification & Aging:
Traditional vinification. The average proportion of new oak barrels is 30% to 40% depending on the vintage. Only one racking is made at the end of the malolactic fermentation, usually at the end of the winter following the harvest. When the wines are about eighteen months old, usually in April, the blending of the barrels of the same appellation is carried out thanks to a racking in blending vats. The wine is fined with egg white albumin at this time. The wines are kept "on fining agents" until the end of August, when it's time for bottling.

"The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaliots has a well-defined bouquet with raspberry coulis and bergamot scents, just a hint of Earl Grey tea that emerges with time. The palate is crisp and fresh with fine-grain tannin. I appreciate the tension and energy conveyed by this Chaliots, demonstrating more precision and details than the village cru and with better persistence on the aftertaste. "An overtly sauvage and very earthy nose is composed by notes of plum, violet and black cherry. The medium weight flavors are also attractively rich with a sleek and supple mouthfeel that is enhanced by the somewhat finer grain of the supporting tannins on the dusty and saline finish. This is a bit less structured and a wine that should also drink reasonably well on the younger side if desired." (Jan 15, 2018)
