About This Wine:

For three generations the Maculan family has been selecting and vinifying the best grapes in Breganze, an enchanting village at the foot of the Alps in Italy’s Veneto region. While the surrounding mountains protect the area from cold winds, creating a perfect microclimate for the cultivation of wine grapes, it is Fausto Maculan’s drive and commitment that sets these wines apart and distinguishes Maculan as an innovative, dynamic winery. Continually at the forefront of any dessert wine discussion, Fausto Maculan has received numerous accolades from the world’s most esteemed wine critics.

The Maculan farm comprises 37 acres of estate-owned vineyards in the charming town of Breganze. Located in the Veneto region about 12 miles north of Vicenza and roughly equidistant from Verona and Venice, Maculan also has contracts with growers of another 125 vineyard acres within the Breganze DOC. The location of Breganze at the southernmost foothills of the Dolomite Alps provides perfect southern exposures along with protection from central European winters.

Maculan Fratta will appeal to your inner hedonist. The wine is made from roughly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot grown in estate vineyards around Breganze, a charming wine village in the northern Veneto region located along the foothills of the Dolomites. Fermented in stainless steel and then aged for one year new in French oak barriques. Fratta is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its beautiful profile—which has become legendary among connoisseurs.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Fratta is a serious, powerful red. Today it comes across as a bit closed in on itself, but my impression is that all it needs is further bottle age. Hints of tobacco, earthiness and dried flowers emerge over time, adding considerable complexity to the black fruit. The finish is long and refined, but it, too, needs time to show its full pedigree. Fratta is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot aged in 100% new French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. " - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2012)

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Dark ruby. Intense, concentrated, deep aromas of cassis, dark plum, sweet spices, ink and cedar. Enters the mouth rich and dense, then turns fresh and suave in the middle, with harmonious acidity lifting the rich black fruit, tea and cedar flavors. Finishes fresh, clean and quite Bordeaux-like, with building but polished tannins. Impressive for its combination of size and balance." - Ian d'Agata (Mar/Apr 2012)
