Notes from the Winemaker:
Llopart Original was born with the desire to perpetuate the family winemaking traditions and methods of the 19th century. Llopart Original was released in 2012, 2006 vintage, commemorating the 125th birthday of the first bottle of the family saga. Made only with grapes from the oldest mountain vineyards, located at 380 m. above sea level, where the vines grow with limited vigor but produce grapes of maximum concentration and character. Where the ancestral Montònega variety used to predominate. It is elaborated respecting to the maximum all the artisan and traditional methodology.
The harvest of the three local varieties from the vineyards of Les Flandes is done by hand, and the grapes are whole-pressed in order to maintain their properties to the maximum. We ferment the musts at low temperatures to preserve the wine’s freshest aromas. The base wines are bottled at the beginning of the year and the bottles are placed in the aging cellar, where, at a constant temperature and humidity, in the dark, they will rest for a minimum of 108 months. After the aging time, we move the Original bottles to the racks, where we proceed to the manual riddling of each one of them. After a month of manual stirring, we disgorge to remove the wine mothers, and we cork the bottles with the final closure.
Blend:
Montònega 50% (vineyard del Ticu, planted 1935)
Xarel·lo 25% (vineyard del Pere de Can Ros, planted 1934)
Macabeu 25% (vineyard de l’Isidoro, planted 1956)
Aging
More than 108 months
Dosage
Brut Nature
Tasting Notes:
Llopart Original has great aromatic depth, with tones of ripe white fruit and honey, and a notable presence of aging notes such as brioche, toast, butter and nuts. Powerful flavor, rounded acidity, very rich. From the Montònega, the predominant variety in its blending, we can extract extraordinary notes of aging and touches of complex evolution, while retaining a good freshness and subtle liveliness. It has a delicate and persistent aftertaste, with great length and a voluminous finish.
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2012 Original 1887 is a blend of 50% Montonega, 25% Xarel·lo and 25% Macabeo from Subirats in Penedès. Aged up to 108 months on the lees, this complex Corpinnat features aromas of hazelnut, cashew and bakery notes, along with oxidative green apple peel and a faint lime tone. Dry and refreshing, the compact, chalky texture leads to a long, flavorful, sherry-like finish. This is an ethereal, nuanced Corpinnat with a tertiary core." – Joaquin Hidalgo (Sep 2024)
93 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2012 Original 1887 Brut Nature was produced with a blend of 50% Montonega (a specific strain of Parellada), 25% Macabeo and 25% Xarel.lo from old mountain vineyards at 380 meters above sea level. This was disgorged after 108 months in bottle with the lees. It has 12% alcohol and a low pH of 2.95. It has a pale golden color with some copper tints, very fine bubbles and an expressive and captivating nose of dry flowers, chamomile, yeasts, camphor, nutty and spicy, with notes of freshly baked apple pie. It has a fresh palate with very tasty, almost salty flavors and a dry finish. It worked very well to tame the heat from a green Thai curry. 2,009 bottles produced. – Luis Gutierrez (May 2024)
93 Points - James Suckling:
"Attractive golden color with aromas of walnuts, chamomile, figs and dried pineapples. Fresh, with delicious savory pastry and dried fruit elements tied together with a vibrant backbone of acidity and tight bubbles. Montonec, xarel-lo and macabeu. Disgorged March 2023. Drink now." (Apr 2023)
91 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Pronounced aromas of dried red apples, quince, grapes, and sage. Elegant, fine mousse. Deep, woody, earthy notes with demerara sugar, baked celery, and orange compote. Mature, savoury, and earthy, with a supple, evocative, and characterful finish." (May 2024)
90 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Sherry-like wafts of singed almond and brown butter enrich this intriguing, long-aged sparkler, with mandarin orange peel acidity and a salty underpinning animating flavors of white cherry, baked peach, crystallized honey and toast. Parellada, Xarel-lo and Macabeo. Disgorged October 2023. Drink now. 400 cases made, 30 cases imported. – Alison Napjus (Feb 2025)
